Daily Lectionary

January 26, 2019

These daily readings from the EHV follow the one-year daily lectionary provided in Christian Worship: Hymnal, the Lutheran Service Book, and the Treasury of Daily Prayer. In this lectionary, two readings of 15-25 verses each are provided for each day. Under this plan, nearly all of the New Testament and approximately one-third of the Old Testament are read each year. These readings fit well within the daily offices of Matins, Vespers, or Compline as daily family devotions.

Zechariah 2:1-3:10

The Third Vision: A Man With a Measuring Line
21Then I looked up, and I saw a man there with a measuring line in his hand.[] 2I asked him, “Where are you going?”
He answered me, “To measure Jerusalem, to determine its width and its length.”
3At that moment, when the angel who was speaking with me was about to leave, another angel came to meet him and 4said, “Run and tell this young man that Jerusalem will be inhabited as a city without walls because of the large number of people and livestock in it. 5For I myself will be a wall of fire around it, declares the Lord, and I will be the glory within it.”
6Attention! Attention! Flee from the land of the north, declares the Lord, for I have scattered you as the four winds of the heavens, declares the Lord.
7Attention, Zion! Escape, you who dwell with the daughter of Babylon! 8For this is what the Lord of Armies says. For the sake of his glory he sent me to the nations that plundered you, because whoever touches you touches the apple of his eye.[] [] 9Yes, I myself will swing my hand over them, and they will become plunder for their own slaves. Then you will know that the Lord of Armies has sent me.
10Sing loudly and rejoice, daughter of Zion. Yes, look! I am coming, and I will dwell among you, declares the Lord. 11Many nations will be joined to the Lord on that day, and they will become my people. I will dwell among you, and you will know that the Lord of Armies has sent me to you. 12Then the Lord will take possession of Judah as his special portion of the holy soil, and he will again choose Jerusalem. 13Keep silent before the Lord, all flesh, because he has roused himself from his holy dwelling.
The Fourth Vision: Joshua and Satan Stand Before the Angel of the Lord
31Then he showed me Joshua, the high priest, standing before the Angel of the Lord, and Satan was standing at his right hand to accuse him.
2The Lord said to Satan, “The Lord rebuke you, Satan! The Lord, who has chosen Jerusalem, rebuke you! Isn't this man a burning stick plucked from a fire?”
3Now Joshua was clothed in filthy clothing and was standing in front of the angel. 4Then the Angel of the Lord spoke to those who were standing in front of him: “Remove his filthy clothing.”
Then he said to Joshua, “See, I have taken your guilt away from you, so that I may clothe you in a special robe.”
5I said,[] “Let them place a clean turban on his head.” So they placed a clean turban on his head and got him dressed, while the Angel of the Lord was standing by.
6Then the Angel of the Lord spoke solemnly to Joshua:
7This is what the Lord of Armies says. If you will walk in my ways and perform my service, then you will also govern my house and watch over my courts, and I will give you access among those who are standing here.
8Now listen, High Priest Joshua, you and your associates who sit in front of you—because these men are a sign. Look! I am going to bring my servant, the Branch. 9Look carefully at the stone that I placed in front of Joshua! On one stone with seven facets[] I will engrave an inscription, declares the Lord of Armies, and I will remove the guilt of this land in a single day.
10On that day, declares the Lord of Armies, each one of you will invite his neighbor to join him under his vine and under his fig tree.

Romans 15:1-13

Serve One Another As Christ Served You
151We who are strong have an obligation to bear with the weaknesses of those who are not strong, and not just to please ourselves. 2Each of us should please his neighbor for the good purpose of building him up. 3For even Christ did not please himself, but as it is written: “The insults of those who are insulting you fell on me.”[]
4Indeed, whatever was written in the past was written for our instruction, so that, through patient endurance and the encouragement of the Scriptures, we would have hope. 5And may God, the source of patient endurance and encouragement, grant that you agree with one another in accordance with Christ Jesus, 6so that with one mind, in one voice, you may glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.
7For this reason, accept one another as Christ also accepted you to the glory of God. 8For I am saying that Christ became a servant of those who are circumcised for the sake of God's truth, to confirm the promises made to the patriarchs. 9He also did this so that the Gentiles would glorify God for his mercy, as it is written:
For this reason I will praise you among the Gentiles,
and I will sing to your name.[]
10And again it says:
Rejoice, you Gentiles, with his people.[]
11And again:
Praise the Lord, all you Gentiles,
and let all the peoples give him praise.[]
12And again Isaiah says:
There will be a Root of Jesse,
and he is the one who will rise up to rule the Gentiles;
on him the Gentiles will place their hope.[]
13Now may the God of hope fill you with complete joy and peace as you continue to believe, so that you overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.
