Daily Lectionary

September 22, 2023

These daily readings from the EHV follow the one-year daily lectionary provided in Christian Worship: Hymnal, the Lutheran Service Book, and the Treasury of Daily Prayer. In this lectionary, two readings of 15-25 verses each are provided for each day. Under this plan, nearly all of the New Testament and approximately one-third of the Old Testament are read each year. These readings fit well within the daily offices of Matins, Vespers, or Compline as daily family devotions.

Nehemiah 7:1-4, 8:1-18

Gatekeepers Are Appointed for the City
71When the wall had been built and I had installed the doors, and when the gatekeepers, the singers, and the Levites had been appointed, 2I placed my brother Hanani along with Hananiah, the commander of the citadel, in charge of Jerusalem, because he was a trustworthy man and feared God more than many. 3I[] said to them, “The gates of Jerusalem should not be left open until the heat of the day, but while the guards are still on duty, they are to shut the doors and secure them. Appoint guards from the residents of Jerusalem, some at their guard posts and some in front of their houses.”
Repopulating the City
4Now the city was wide open and spacious, but there were few people in it, and no houses were being built.
Ezra Reads the Law of Moses
81When the seventh month came and the Israelites were in their cities,[] all the people gathered together at the public square that is in front of the Water Gate. They told Ezra the scribe to bring the Book of the Law of Moses, which the Lord had commanded Israel. 2So on the first day of the seventh month, Ezra the priest brought the Law before the congregation, both men and women and all who were able to understand what they heard. 3From dawn until midday in front of the public square in front of the Water Gate, he read from the scroll, while facing the men, the women, and those who could understand. All the people listened attentively to the Book of the Law. 4Ezra the scribe stood on a wooden platform that was made for the occasion. Beside him stood Mattithiah, Shema, Anaiah, Uriah, Hilkiah, and Ma'aseiah on his right, and on his left were Pedaiah, Mishael, Malkijah, Hashum, Hashbaddanah, Zechariah, and Meshullam.
5All the people could see Ezra as he opened the scroll, because he was elevated above all the people. As he opened the scroll, all the people stood. 6Then Ezra blessed the Lord, the great God, and all the people answered, “Amen! Amen!” while they lifted up their hands and then knelt and bowed down with their faces to the ground.
7Jeshua and Bani and Sherebiah, Jamin, Akkub, Shabbethai, Hodiah, Ma'aseiah, Kelita, Azariah, Jozabad, Hanan, Pelaiah, and the rest of the Levites helped the people understand the Law, while the people remained standing in their places. 8So they read from the Book of the Law of God clearly and interpreted it, and the people understood what was read.[]
9Then Nehemiah the governor, Ezra the priest and scribe, and the Levites, who helped the people understand, said to all the people, “Today is holy to the Lord your God. Do not mourn or cry!” because all the people were crying as they heard the words of the Law. 10Nehemiah said to them, “Go, eat rich food and drink sweet drinks and send portions to those who have nothing prepared, because today is holy to our Lord. Do not grieve, because the joy of the Lord is your strength.”
11Then the Levites silenced all the people, saying, “Hush! Today is holy. Do not grieve.”
12All the people went to eat and drink and to send portions to others and to celebrate with great joy, because they understood the words that had been made known to them.
Ezra Leads the Study of the Law of Moses
13Now on the second day, the heads of the families of all the people, the priests, and the Levites were gathered around Ezra the scribe to study the words of the Law. 14They found written in the Law, which the Lord had commanded by the hand of Moses, that the Israelites should dwell in temporary shelters during the festival of the seventh month, 15and that they should proclaim this and make this announcement in all their cities and in Jerusalem: “Go out to the mountains and bring branches from olive trees, wild olive trees, myrtle bushes, date palms, and leafy trees to make shelters, as it is written.”
16So the people went out and brought branches and made shelters for themselves. Each man made a shelter on his roof. They also made shelters in their courtyards, in the courtyards of the house of God, in the square by the Water Gate, and in the square by the Ephraim Gate. 17The entire congregation that had returned from the captivity made shelters and stayed in the shelters. From the days of Joshua[] son of Nun until that day, the Israelites had not celebrated in this way, because there was very great joy. 18Ezra also read from the Book of the Law of God every day, from the first day to the last day of the festival. They celebrated a festival for seven days, and on the eighth day they held an assembly according to the ordinance.

Attitude Toward Various Age Groups
51Do not rebuke an older man harshly, but encourage him as a father, younger men as brothers, 2older women as mothers, younger women as sisters, with all purity.
Taking Care of Widows
3Honor widows who are truly widows. 4But if any widow has children or grandchildren, let them first learn to be devoted to their own household and repay their parents,[] for this is pleasing in the sight of God. 5Now the widow who is without relatives has put her hope in God and continues in her petitions and prayers night and day. 6But the widow who lives only for her own pleasure is dead, even while she lives. 7Insist on these things also, in order that they may be above criticism. 8But if anyone does not provide for his own family, and especially for his own household, he has denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever.
9Let a widow be put on the list if she is over sixty years old, has been a wife of one husband, 10and has a good reputation for doing good: if she brought up children, if she showed hospitality to strangers, if she washed the feet of the saints, if she provided help for those in distress, and if she dedicated herself to every good work. 11But do not put younger widows on the list, for when they have strong sensual desires that pull them away from Christ, they want to marry, 12and so they bring judgment on themselves because they set aside their former pledge.[] 13At the same time, they also learn to be lazy as they go about from house to house. They not only learn to be lazy, but also to be gossips and busybodies, saying things that they should not say. 14Therefore I want younger widows[] to marry, to have children, to keep house, and to give no opportunity for the enemy to slander them. 15In fact, some have already turned away to follow Satan.
16If any believing woman[] has widows in her family, let her keep helping them rather than letting them become a burden to the church, so that the church may help those who are truly widows.
