Daily Lectionary

October 7, 2023

These daily readings from the EHV follow the one-year daily lectionary provided in Christian Worship: Hymnal, the Lutheran Service Book, and the Treasury of Daily Prayer. In this lectionary, two readings of 15-25 verses each are provided for each day. Under this plan, nearly all of the New Testament and approximately one-third of the Old Testament are read each year. These readings fit well within the daily offices of Matins, Vespers, or Compline as daily family devotions.

Deuteronomy 6:10-25

10When the Lord your God brings you to the land about which he swore to your fathers, to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, that he would give it to you, he will bring you to great and good cities that you did not build, 11to houses full of all kinds of good things that you did not fill, to wells that you did not dig, and to vineyards and olives that you did not plant. Then, when you eat and are full, 12watch yourself, so that you do not forget the Lord, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, where you were slaves. 13Fear the Lord your God, serve him, and swear by his name. 14Do not go after other gods from among the gods of the peoples around you. 15If you do, the Lord your God will be a jealous God in your midst, and the anger of the Lord your God will burn against you, and he will destroy you from the face of the earth.
16Do not put the Lord your God to the test the way you tested him at Massah. 17Be very conscientious about keeping the commandments of the Lord your God and his testimonies and his statutes, which he commanded you. 18Do what is right and good in the eyes of the Lord, so that it may go well for you and you may go and take possession of the good land that the Lord promised to your fathers with an oath, 19driving out all your enemies from your presence, as the Lord promised.
20When your son asks you in the future, “What are these testimonies and statutes and ordinances that the Lord our God has commanded for you?” 21then you are to say to your son, “We were slaves of Pharaoh in Egypt, but the Lord brought us out of Egypt with a strong hand. 22Right before our eyes the Lord gave great, devastating signs and wonders in Egypt against Pharaoh and against his whole household. 23Then he brought us out of there to bring us in and give us the land that he promised to our fathers with an oath.”
24Then the Lord commanded us to carry out all of these statutes, to fear the Lord our God for our own lasting good, to keep us alive, even as we are today. 25Righteousness will be ours when we are conscientious about carrying out this entire set of commands in the presence of the Lord our God as he commanded us.

Matthew 9:18-38

The Daughter of Jairus
18As he was saying these things to them, there was a ruler who came, bowed down to him, and said, “My daughter has just died. But come, place your hand on her, and she will live.”
19Jesus got up and followed him, as did his disciples. 20Just then, a woman who had been suffering from chronic bleeding for twelve years came up from behind and touched the fringe of his garment. 21For she had been saying to herself, “If I just touch his garment, I will be healed.”
22When Jesus turned around and saw her, he said, “Take heart, daughter! Your faith has healed you.” And the woman was healed from that moment.
23When Jesus came into the ruler's house and saw the flute players and the noisy crowd, 24he said to them, “Go away, for the girl is not dead but is sleeping.”
But they laughed at him.
25When the crowd was sent out of the house, Jesus went in, took the girl by the hand, and she was raised. 26News of this went out through the entire region.
Two Blind Men
27As Jesus left that place, two blind men followed him, calling out, “Have mercy on us, Son of David!”
28When he entered the house, the blind men came to him. Jesus said to them, “Do you believe that I am able to do this?”
They told him, “Yes, Lord.”
29Then he touched their eyes and said, “According to your faith let it be done for you.” 30And their eyes were opened. Then Jesus warned them emphatically, “See to it that no one learns about this.” 31But they went out and spread the word about him throughout that entire region.
Jesus Heals a Mute Man
32Just as they were leaving, people brought to him a demon-possessed man who could not talk. 33After the demon was driven out, the mute man spoke. The crowds were amazed and said, “Nothing like this has ever been seen in Israel!”
34But the Pharisees said, “He drives out demons by the ruler of demons.”
35Jesus traveled through all the towns and villages, teaching in their synagogues, preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing every disease and every sickness.
Pray for Workers
36When he saw the crowds, he was moved with compassion for them, because they were troubled and downcast, like sheep without a shepherd. 37Then he said to his disciples, “The harvest is plentiful, but the workers are few. 38Therefore pray that the Lord of the harvest will send out workers into his harvest.”
