Daily Lectionary

December 1, 2023

These daily readings from the EHV follow the one-year daily lectionary provided in Christian Worship: Hymnal, the Lutheran Service Book, and the Treasury of Daily Prayer. In this lectionary, two readings of 15-25 verses each are provided for each day. Under this plan, nearly all of the New Testament and approximately one-third of the Old Testament are read each year. These readings fit well within the daily offices of Matins, Vespers, or Compline as daily family devotions.

Isaiah 7:10-8:8

10The Lord spoke to Ahaz again. He said, 11“Ask for a sign from the Lord your God. Ask for it either in the depths below or in the heights above.”
12But Ahaz responded, “I will not ask. I will not test the Lord.”
13So Isaiah said:
Listen now, you house of David. Is it not enough for you to test the patience of men? Will you test the patience of my God as well? 14Therefore the Lord himself will give a sign for all of you.[] Look! The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son and name him Immanuel.[] 15He will eat curds and honey by the time he knows how to refuse evil and choose good, 16because even before the child knows how to refuse evil and choose good, the land whose two kings you dread will be forsaken.
17The Lord will bring on you, on your people, and on your father's house, days worse than any since the day that Ephraim broke away from Judah. The Lord will bring the king of Assyria.
18This is what will take place in that day: The Lord will whistle for the fly that is at the farthest end of Egypt's rivers and for the bee that is in the land of Assyria. 19They will come and settle in the deep ravines, in the clefts in the rocks, among all the thorn hedges, and in all the pastures.[]
20In that day the Lord will shave with a razor hired from the regions beyond the River Euphrates, namely, the king of Assyria. This razor will shave their head and the hair on their legs, and it will also scrape away their beard.
21In that day a man will keep alive a young cow and two sheep, 22and because of the abundant milk they give, he will eat curds. So everyone left in the land will eat curds and honey. 23In that day, in every place where a thousand vines worth a thousand silver shekels were growing, there will be only briers and thorns. 24Hunters will go there with a bow and arrow, because all that land will be briers and thorns. 25You will no longer venture into all the hills that once were cultivated with the hoe, because you will be afraid of the briers and thorns, and the hills will be a pasture for grazing oxen, a land trampled by sheep.
Isaiah and His Sons Are a Sign
81The Lord said to me, “Get a large tablet and write on it with a man's stylus: For Maher Shalal Hash Baz.”
2I also swore in faithful witnesses: Uriah the priest and Zechariah son of Jeberekiah.[]
3I approached the prophetess, and she conceived and gave birth to a son. Then the Lord said to me, “Name him Maher Shalal Hash Baz.[] 4For before the child knows how to say, ‘My father’ and ‘My mother,’ the riches of Damascus and the plunder of Samaria will be carried away by the king of Assyria.”
5Then the Lord spoke to me again and said:
6Because these people have rejected the gently flowing waters of Shiloah, and they rejoice in Rezin and in Remaliah's son, 7therefore, the Lord is now about to bring against them the mighty floodwaters of the River,[] that is, the king of Assyria in all his glory. It will overflow all its channels, and it will flood all its banks. 8It will sweep onward into Judah. It will overflow and pass through the land. It will rise up all the way to the neck, and its wingspan will reach across the width of your land, Immanuel.

1 Peter 3:1-22

Wives and Husbands
31Wives, in the same way, be submissive to your own husbands, so that even if some do not obey the word, they might be won over without a word by the behavior of their wives, 2as they observe your respectful and holy behavior. 3Do not let your beauty be something outward, such as braided hair or wearing gold jewelry or fine clothes. 4Rather let your beauty be the hidden person of your heart—the lasting beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is precious in God's sight. 5In fact, this is also how the holy women of the past who put their hope in God made themselves beautiful. They were submissive to their own husbands, 6just as Sarah obeyed Abraham and called him lord.[] You are her daughters if you do what is good and do not fear anything that is intimidating.
7Husbands, in the same way, continue to live with your wives with the knowledge that, as the wife, she is the weaker vessel.[] Also continue to accord them honor as fellow heirs with you of the gracious gift of life, so that your prayers will not be hindered.
General Exhortations
8Finally, all of you, live in harmony with one another. Show sympathy, brotherly love, compassion, and humility.[] 9Do not repay evil with evil or insult with insult. Instead, speak a blessing, because you were called for the purpose of inheriting a blessing. 10Indeed:
Let the one who wants to love life
and to see good days
keep his tongue from evil
and his lips from saying anything deceitful.
11Let him turn from evil and do what is good.
Let him seek peace and pursue it.
12For the eyes of the Lord are on the righteous,
and his ears are open to their requests.
But the face of the Lord is against those who do evil.[]
Suffering for Doing Good
13Who will harm you if you are eager to do[] what is good? 14But even if you should happen to suffer because of righteousness, you are blessed. Do not be afraid of what they fear,[] and do not be troubled. 15But regard the Lord, the Christ,[] as holy in your hearts.[] Always be prepared to give an answer[] to everyone who asks you to give a reason for the hope that is in you. 16But speak with gentleness and respect, while maintaining a clear conscience, so that those who attack your good way of life in Christ may be put to shame because they slandered you as evildoers.[]
The Suffering and Exaltation of Christ
17Indeed, it is better, if it is God's will, to suffer for doing good than for doing evil, 18because Christ also suffered once for sins in our place,[] the righteous for the unrighteous, to bring you[] to God. He was put to death in flesh[] but was made alive in spirit,[] 19in which he also went and made an announcement to the spirits in prison. 20These spirits disobeyed long ago, when God's patience was waiting in the days of Noah while the ark was being built. In this ark a few, that is, eight souls, were saved by water. 21And corresponding to that, baptism now saves you—not the removal of dirt from the body but the guarantee[] of a good conscience before God through the resurrection of Jesus Christ. 22He went to heaven and is at the right hand of God, with angels, authorities, and powers made subject to him.
