Daily Lectionary

December 9, 2023

These daily readings from the EHV follow the one-year daily lectionary provided in Christian Worship: Hymnal, the Lutheran Service Book, and the Treasury of Daily Prayer. In this lectionary, two readings of 15-25 verses each are provided for each day. Under this plan, nearly all of the New Testament and approximately one-third of the Old Testament are read each year. These readings fit well within the daily offices of Matins, Vespers, or Compline as daily family devotions.

Isaiah 26:1-19

A Victory Song
261On that day this song will be sung in the land of Judah.
We have a strong city.
God sets up salvation as its walls and ramparts.
2Open the gates,
so that the righteous nation may enter,
the nation that guards the truth.[]
3You preserve perfect peace for the person
whose resolve is steadfast,
because he trusts in you.
4Trust in the Lord forever,
for the Lord, yes the Lord[] is the eternal Rock.
5He humbles those who live in a high place,
in a high, secure city.
He brings it down!
He brings it down to the ground!
He throws it down into the dust!
6It is trampled down
by the feet of the poor,
by the soles of the feet of the helpless.
A Prayer for Blessing
7The way of the righteous is level and smooth.
You are righteous.[] You smooth the path for the righteous.
8Truly, Lord, we have waited for you on the path of your judgments.
Your name and your renown are what our soul desires.
9My soul longs for you during the night.
My spirit within me looks for you early in the morning,
because when your judgments are known on earth,
the inhabitants of the world will learn what righteousness is.
10Although grace is shown to the wicked,
they do not learn righteousness.
They will continue to act unjustly even in a righteous land.
They will not recognize the Lord's majesty.
11 Lord, your hand is raised, ready to strike,
but they do not see it.
But they will see your zeal for the people,
and they will be put to shame.
May fire consume your enemies.
12O Lord, you establish peace for us.
Everything we have done, you have accomplished for us.
13O Lord our God, other lords besides you have ruled over us,
but we honor only your name.
14They are dead. They will not live again.
Their departed spirits will not return.
You have dealt with them and destroyed them.
You have wiped out all memory of them.
15You have enlarged the nation, O Lord.
You have enlarged the nation!
You are glorified!
You have extended all the borders of the land.
16O Lord, they appealed to you in distress.
They whispered a prayer as you disciplined them.
17Just as a pregnant woman nearing the time of her delivery
writhes and cries out in her pain,
so we have done before you, O Lord.
18We have been in pain
as if we were about to give birth to a child,
but we gave birth only to wind.
We have not brought salvation for the earth.
We have not given birth to people who can inhabit the world.[]
19But your dead ones will live.
Their[] dead bodies will rise.
Wake up and sing for joy,
you who dwell in the dust,
because your dew will glisten like morning light,
and the earth will give up the spirits of the dead.[]

1 John 3:1-24

Love From the Father
31See the kind of love the Father has given us that we should be called children of God, and that is what we are! The world does not know us, because it did not know him. 2Dear friends, we are children of God now, but what we will be has not yet been revealed. We know that when he is revealed we will be like him, and we will see him as he really is. 3Everyone who has this hope purifies himself, just as Jesus[] is pure.
4Everyone who commits sin also commits lawlessness. Sin is lawlessness. 5You know that he appeared in order to take away our sins and in him there is no sin. 6Anyone who remains in him does not keep on sinning. The person who keeps on sinning has not seen him or known him.
7Dear children, do not let anyone deceive you. Whoever does what is right is righteous just as Jesus[] is righteous. 8The one who continues to sin is of the Devil, because the Devil has been sinning from the beginning. This is why the Son of God appeared: to destroy the works of the Devil. 9Nobody who has been born of God continues to commit sin, because God's seed remains in him. He cannot go on sinning, because he has been born of God. 10This is how the children of God and the children of the Devil are obvious: Everyone who does not do what is right is not from God, along with everyone who does not love his brother.
Love One Another
11This is the message you have heard from the beginning: Love one another. 12Do not be like Cain, who belonged to the Evil One and murdered his brother. And why did he murder him? Because his own works were evil, while those of his brother were righteous. 13Do not be surprised, brothers,[] if the world hates you. 14We know that we have crossed over from death to life, because we love our brothers. The one who does not love[] remains in death. 15Everyone who hates his brother is a murderer, and you know that no murderer has eternal life remaining in him. 16This is how we have come to know love: Jesus[] laid down his life for us. And we also should lay down our lives for our brothers. 17Whoever has worldly wealth and sees his brother in need but closes his heart against him—how can God's love remain in him? 18Dear children, let us love not only with word or with our tongue, but also in action and truth.
19This is how we know that we are of the truth and how we will set our hearts at rest in his presence: 20If our hearts condemn us, God is greater than our hearts, and he knows everything. 21Dear friends, if our hearts do not condemn us, we have confidence before God. 22We also receive from him whatever we ask, because we keep his commands and do what is pleasing in his sight. 23This then is his command: that we believe in the name of his Son, Jesus Christ, and that we love one another just as he commanded us. 24The one who keeps his commands remains in God[] and God[] in him. This is how we know that he remains in us: We know it from the Spirit, whom he has given to us.
