These daily readings from the EHV follow the one-year daily lectionary provided in Christian Worship: Hymnal, the Lutheran Service Book, and the Treasury of Daily Prayer. In this lectionary, two readings of 15-25 verses each are provided for each day. Under this plan, nearly all of the New Testament and approximately one-third of the Old Testament are read each year. These readings fit well within the daily offices of Matins, Vespers, or Compline as daily family devotions.

Numbers 32:1-6, 16-27

The Transjordan Tribes
321The descendants of Reuben and Gad had very large flocks and herds of livestock. They saw that the land of Jazer and the land of Gilead was ideal for livestock. 2The descendants of Gad and Reuben came and spoke to Moses, Eleazar the priest, and the tribal chiefs of the community. They said, 3“Ataroth, Dibon, Jazer, Nimrah, Heshbon, Elealeh, Sebam, Nebo, and Beon— 4the land which the Lord struck down before the community of Israel—is an ideal land for livestock. We, your servants, have livestock.” 5They continued, “If we have found favor in your eyes, let this land be given to your servants as a possession. Do not require us to cross the Jordan.”
6Moses said to the descendants of Gad and Reuben, “Do you expect your brothers to go into battle while you live here?
16They approached him and said, “We will build sheep pens here for our livestock and cities for our children, 17but we will be quick to arm ourselves to go ahead of the Israelites until we have brought them to their own places. Our children will live in our fortified cities because of the inhabitants of the land, 18but we will not return to our houses until the Israelites have each taken possession of their inheritance. 19We certainly will not have any claim to an inheritance with them on the other side of the Jordan, because our inheritance has come to us here on the east side of the Jordan, toward the sunrise.”
20Moses said to them, “If you will do what you have said, if you will arm yourselves before the Lord for battle, 21and if every one of you who is armed will cross over the Jordan before the Lord until he has driven out his enemies before him, 22and until the land has been subdued before the Lord, then after that you may return home. You will be guiltless toward the Lord and Israel. This land will be a possession for you in the presence of the Lord.
23“But if you will not do this, look, you will have sinned against the Lord. Know that your sin will find you out. 24Build cities for your children, and pens for your flocks, but keep the promises that have come out of your mouth.”
25The descendants of Gad and Reuben spoke to Moses: “We, your servants, will do as my lord commands. 26Our children, our wives, our livestock, and all our animals will stay here by the cities of Gilead, 27but your servants, every man who is armed for war, will cross over before the Lord for battle, as my lord says.”

Luke 24:1-27

Jesus' Resurrection
(Matthew 28:1-10; Mark 16:1-8; John 20:1-10)
241On the first day of the week, very early in the morning, the women[] went to the tomb, carrying the spices they had prepared. 2They found that the stone had been rolled away from the tomb. 3When they went in, they did not find the body of the Lord Jesus. 4While they were wondering about this, suddenly two men stood by them in dazzling clothing. 5The women were terrified and bowed down with their faces to the ground.
The men said to them, “Why are you looking for the living among the dead? 6He is not here, but has been raised! Remember how he told you while he was still in Galilee 7that the Son of Man must be delivered over to the hands of sinful men, and be crucified, and the third day rise again?” 8Then they remembered his words.
9When they returned from the tomb, they told all these things to the Eleven and to all the rest. 10It was Mary Magdalene, Joanna, Mary the mother of James, and the other women with them who told these things to the apostles. 11Yet these words seemed to them like nonsense, and they did not believe them. 12But Peter got up and ran to the tomb. Bending over to look in, he saw only the strips of linen cloth. He went home, amazed at what had happened.
On the Way to Emmaus
13Now, on that same day, two of them were going to a village named Emmaus, about seven miles[] from Jerusalem. 14They were talking with each other about all of these things that had happened. 15While they were talking and discussing this, Jesus himself approached and began to walk along with them. 16But their eyes were kept from recognizing him. 17He said to them, “What are you talking about as you walk along?” Saddened, they stopped.
18One of them, named Cleopas, answered him, “Are you the only visitor in Jerusalem who does not know the things that have happened there in these days?”
19“What things?” he asked them.
They replied, “The things concerning Jesus of Nazareth, a man who was a prophet, mighty in deed and word before God and all the people. 20The chief priests and our rulers handed him over to be condemned to death. And they crucified him. 21But we were hoping that he was going to redeem Israel. Not only that, but besides all this, it is now the third day since these things happened. 22Also some women of our group amazed us. They were at the tomb early in the morning. 23When they did not find his body, they came back saying that they had even seen a vision of angels, who said that he was alive. 24Some of those who were with us went to the tomb. They found it just as the women had said, but they did not see him.”
25He said to them, “How foolish you are and slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken! 26Did not the Christ have to suffer these things and to enter his glory?” 27Then beginning with Moses and all the prophets, he explained to them what was said in all the Scriptures concerning himself.
