Daily Lectionary

June 2, 2024

These daily readings from the EHV follow the one-year daily lectionary provided in Christian Worship: Hymnal, the Lutheran Service Book, and the Treasury of Daily Prayer. In this lectionary, two readings of 15-25 verses each are provided for each day. Under this plan, nearly all of the New Testament and approximately one-third of the Old Testament are read each year. These readings fit well within the daily offices of Matins, Vespers, or Compline as daily family devotions.

Ecclesiastes 10:1-20

101Dead flies make perfumed oil ferment and stink, just as a little stupidity outweighs wisdom and honor.
2A wise man's heart heads right, but a fool's heart heads left.
3Even when a fool is walking down the road, he does not know where he is going, and he advertises to everyone that he is a fool.
4If a ruler's anger rises against you, do not abandon your post, because keeping calm puts serious sins to rest.
5There is an evil I have seen under the sun. What a mistake rulers make! 6Stupidity is placed in many high places, but the rich are seated in low positions. 7I have seen slaves on horses, while princes walk on the ground like slaves.
8A person who digs a pit might fall into it, and one who breaks through a wall might be bitten by a snake.
9A person who quarries stones may be hurt by them. Someone who splits logs may be endangered by them.
10If the ax is dull and no one sharpens its edge, the person chopping must apply more strength, but an advantage of wisdom is that it gives success.
11If the snake bites before it is charmed, there is no advantage to having a charmer.[]
12Words from a wise man's mouth bring favor, but a fool's lips swallow him up.
13The fool starts out by saying stupid things, but he ends up speaking wicked madness. 14The fool multiplies words.
No one knows what will be in the future, and who can tell him what will come after him?
15The hard work of fools wears them out so much that they no longer know their way to town.[]
16How unfortunate you are, O land, when your king once was a servant,[] and your officials overeat in the morning. 17How blessed you are, O land, when your king is a son of nobles, and your officials eat at the right time—to get stronger, not to get drunk.
18Because of laziness, roof beams sag. Because of idle hands, the house leaks.
19Food is made for pleasure. Wine makes life happy, but money is the answer for everything.
20Do not curse the king even in your thoughts, and do not curse a rich person in your bedroom, for a bird in the skies might carry your voice, or a bird in flight might reveal the matter.

John 10:1-21

The Good Shepherd
101“Amen, Amen, I tell you: Anyone who does not enter the sheep pen by the door, but climbs in by some other way, is a thief and a robber. 2The one who enters by the door is the shepherd of the sheep. 3The doorkeeper opens the door for him, and the sheep listen to his voice. He calls his own sheep by name and leads them out. 4When he has brought out all his own sheep, he walks ahead of them. The sheep follow him because they know his voice. 5They will never follow a stranger, but will run away from him, because they do not know the voice of strangers.” 6Jesus used this illustration in speaking to the people, but they did not understand what he was telling them.
7So Jesus said again, “Amen, Amen, I tell you: I am the door for the sheep. 8All who came before me[] were thieves and robbers, but the sheep did not listen to them. 9I am the door. Whoever enters through me will be saved. He will come in and go out, and find pasture.
10“A thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have life, and have it abundantly.
11“I am the Good Shepherd. The Good Shepherd lays down his life for the sheep. 12The hired man, who is not a shepherd, does not own the sheep. He sees the wolf coming, leaves the sheep, and runs away. Then the wolf attacks the sheep and scatters them. 13Because he works for money, he does not care about the sheep.
14“I am the Good Shepherd. I know my sheep and my sheep know me 15(just as the Father knows me and I know the Father). And I lay down my life for the sheep. 16I also have other sheep that are not of this sheep pen. I must bring them also, and they will listen to my voice. Then there will be one flock and one shepherd. 17This is why the Father loves me, because I lay down my life so that I may take it up again. 18No one takes it from me, but I lay it down on my own. I have the authority to lay it down, and I have the authority to take it up again. This is the commission I received from my Father.”
19There was a division among the Jews again because of these words. 20Many of them were saying, “He has a demon and is out of his mind! Why listen to him?” 21Others said, “These are not the sayings of someone demon-possessed. Can a demon open the eyes of the blind?”
