Daily Lectionary

June 11, 2024

These daily readings from the EHV follow the one-year daily lectionary provided in Christian Worship: Hymnal, the Lutheran Service Book, and the Treasury of Daily Prayer. In this lectionary, two readings of 15-25 verses each are provided for each day. Under this plan, nearly all of the New Testament and approximately one-third of the Old Testament are read each year. These readings fit well within the daily offices of Matins, Vespers, or Compline as daily family devotions.

Proverbs 9:1-18

Lady Wisdom's Banquet
91Wisdom has built her house.
She has carved out her seven pillars.
2She has prepared her meat.
She has mixed her wine.
She has already set her table.
3She has sent out her servant girls.
She calls from the highest point in the city,
4“Whoever is naïve,[] let him turn in here.”
To someone who lacks sense she says,
5“Come, eat my food,
and drink the wine that I have mixed.
6Abandon your naïve ways and live.
Travel the road to understanding.”
Lady Wisdom's Proverbs
7Whoever corrects a mocker invites insults,
and whoever warns a wicked person invites abuse.
8Do not warn a mocker, or he will hate you.
Warn a wise person, and he will love you.
9Give advice to a wise person, and he will become even wiser.
Teach a righteous person, and he will add to his learning.
10The fear of the Lord is the beginning[] of wisdom,
and the knowledge of the Holy One is understanding,
11because through me your days will be multiplied,
and years will be added to your life.
12If you are wise, you are wise to your own advantage.
But if you scoff, you alone will bear the consequences.
Lady Folly's Banquet
13The woman Folly is boisterous.
She is deluded. She knows nothing.
14She sits at the doorway of her house,
on a throne on the heights of the city,
15in order to call to those who pass by on the street,
those who are simply going along on their way,
16“Whoever is gullible, let him turn in here.”
To someone who lacks sense she says,
17“Stolen waters are sweet,
and food eaten in secret is delicious.”
18But he does not know that the souls of the dead are there,
that her guests are in the depths of hell.[]

John 13:21-38

Who Is the Betrayer?
21After saying this, Jesus was troubled in his spirit and testified, “Amen, Amen, I tell you: One of you will betray me.”
22The disciples were looking at each other, uncertain which of them he meant.
23One of his disciples, the one Jesus loved, was reclining at Jesus' side. 24So Simon Peter motioned to him to find out which one he was talking about.
25So leaning back against Jesus' side, he asked, “Lord, who is it?”
26Jesus replied, “It is the one to whom I will give this piece of bread, after I have dipped it in the dish.” Then he dipped the piece of bread and gave it to Judas, the son of Simon Iscariot. 27As soon as Judas took the bread, Satan entered into him.
So Jesus told him, “What you are about to do, do more quickly.”
28None of those reclining at the table understood why Jesus said this to him. 29Because Judas kept the money box, some thought that Jesus was telling him, “Buy what we need for the Festival,” or to give something to the poor. 30As soon as Judas had taken the bread, he went out. And it was night.
31After Judas left, Jesus said, “Now the Son of Man is glorified, and God is glorified in him.[] 32If God is glorified in him,[] God will also glorify the Son in himself and will glorify him at once.”
Jesus Warns Peter
33“Dear children, I am going to be with you only a little longer. You will look for me, and just as I told the Jews, so I tell you now: Where I am going, you cannot come.
34“A new commandment I give you: Love one another. Just as I have loved you, so also you are to love one another. 35By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.”
36Simon Peter said to him, “Lord, where are you going?”
Jesus answered, “Where I am going you cannot follow now, but you will follow later.”
37Peter asked, “Lord, why can't I follow you now? I will lay down my life for you!”
38Jesus replied, “Will you really lay down your life for me? Amen, Amen, I tell you: The rooster will not crow until you have denied me three times.”
