Daily Lectionary

June 26, 2024

These daily readings from the EHV follow the one-year daily lectionary provided in Christian Worship: Hymnal, the Lutheran Service Book, and the Treasury of Daily Prayer. In this lectionary, two readings of 15-25 verses each are provided for each day. Under this plan, nearly all of the New Testament and approximately one-third of the Old Testament are read each year. These readings fit well within the daily offices of Matins, Vespers, or Compline as daily family devotions.

Joshua 1:1-18

Preparing to Enter the Land
11This is what happened after the death of Moses, the servant of the Lord.
The Lord said to Joshua son of Nun, the attendant of Moses, 2“Moses my servant is dead. So prepare to cross the Jordan River that lies in front of you. You and all this people, prepare to go into the land that I am about to give to the people of Israel. 3I have given you every place where the sole of your foot has stepped, just as I promised Moses. 4From the Wilderness[] and from Lebanon to the Great River, the Euphrates River—all the land of the Hittites—as far as the Mediterranean Sea,[] where the sun sets, this will be your territory. 5No one will be able to stand against you all the days of your life. Just as I was with Moses, I will be with you. I will not abandon you, and I will not forsake you.
6“Be strong and courageous, because you will divide this land among these people, this land which I swore to their fathers that I would give to this people. 7Just be strong and very courageous. Be careful to act according to the entire Law which my servant Moses commanded for you. Do not turn from it to the right or to the left, so that you may succeed wherever you go. 8This Book of the Law must never depart from your mouth, and you are to meditate on it day and night, so that you will act faithfully according to everything written in it, because then you will prosper in everything you do, and you will succeed. 9Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be terrified and do not be overwhelmed, because the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.”
10So Joshua gave this order to the officers of the people: 11“Go through the camp and give this order to the people: ‘Prepare provisions for yourselves, because within three days you will be crossing over this Jordan to take possession of the land that the Lord your God is giving to you as a possession.’”
12To the Reubenites and the Gadites and to half of the tribe of Manasseh Joshua said, 13“Remember the command that Moses, the servant of the Lord, gave you when he said, ‘The Lord your God is granting you rest, and he has given you this land.’ 14Your wives, your children, and your cattle will stay in the land that Moses gave you east of the Jordan, but you yourselves, all of your strong warriors in their military units, are to cross over ahead of your brothers. You are to help your brothers 15until the Lord gives rest to them as he has to you and they too take possession of the land that the Lord your God is giving them. Then you may return to the land allotted to you so that you may fully possess it, the land that Moses, the servant of the Lord, gave to you in the area east of the Jordan, toward the sunrise.”
16Then they answered Joshua, “Everything that you have commanded us we will do. We will go to any place you send us. 17Just as we obeyed Moses in all things, we will likewise obey you. May the Lord your God be with you, just as he was with Moses. 18Anyone who rebels against your orders and does not obey whatever you command him will be put to death. Just be strong and courageous!”

Acts 8:1-25

Saul Agreed With Putting Stephen to Death.
81On that day a great persecution broke out against the church in Jerusalem, and all except the apostles were scattered throughout the countryside of Judea and Samaria. 2Godly men buried Stephen, and they mourned deeply for him.
3But Saul was trying to destroy the church by going into one house after another, dragging off both men and women, and putting them in prison.
The Word of God Spreads in Samaria
4So those believers who were scattered went around proclaiming the gospel message. 5Philip went down to the city of Samaria and began preaching the Christ to them. 6With one mind, the crowds paid close attention to what was being said by Philip when they heard him and saw the miraculous signs he was doing. 7Unclean spirits, crying out with a loud voice, came out of many who were possessed, and many who were paralyzed and lame were healed. 8So there was great joy in that city.
9Now there was a man by the name of Simon, who had been practicing magic arts[] in the city. He amazed the people of Samaria while claiming that he was someone great. 10They all paid attention to him, from the least of them to the greatest, saying, “This man is the power of God that is called ‘Great.’” 11They paid attention to him, because he had amazed them for a long time with his magic arts. 12But when they believed Philip, as he preached the good news about the kingdom of God and the name of Jesus Christ, they were baptized, both men and women.
13Then even Simon himself believed. After he was baptized, he stayed close to Philip. As he observed the signs and great miracles that were taking place, he was amazed.
The Apostles Send Peter and John to Samaria
14When the apostles in Jerusalem heard that Samaria had received the word of God, they sent Peter and John to them. 15When Peter and John arrived, they prayed for them that they might receive the Holy Spirit, 16for he had not yet come upon any of them. They had simply been baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. 17Then Peter and John laid their hands on them, and they received the Holy Spirit.
18When Simon saw that the Holy[] Spirit was given through the laying on of the apostles' hands, he offered them money 19and said, “Give me this power too, so that anyone on whom I lay my hands may receive the Holy Spirit.” 20But Peter said to him, “May your silver perish with you, because you thought you could obtain the gift of God with money! 21You have no part or share in this matter, because your heart is not right in God's sight. 22So repent of this wickedness of yours and pray to the Lord. Perhaps the intent of your heart may be forgiven you. 23For I see that you are filled with bitter poison and chained by wickedness.”
24Then Simon answered, “Pray to the Lord for me so that nothing you have said may happen to me.”
25After Peter and John had testified and spoken the word of the Lord, they returned to Jerusalem, preaching the gospel to many villages of the Samaritans.
