These daily readings from the EHV follow the one-year daily lectionary provided in Christian Worship: Hymnal, the Lutheran Service Book, and the Treasury of Daily Prayer. In this lectionary, two readings of 15-25 verses each are provided for each day. Under this plan, nearly all of the New Testament and approximately one-third of the Old Testament are read each year. These readings fit well within the daily offices of Matins, Vespers, or Compline as daily family devotions.

Job 7:1-21

71Isn't man's time on earth like being compelled to serve in the army?
Aren't his days like those of a hired man?
2Like a slave, he longs for shade,
or like a day laborer, he waits for his pay.
3In the same way, I have been allotted months of futility,
and nights of agony have been assigned to me.
4When I lie down, I think, “How long before I get up?”
But the night drags on,
and I am filled with restlessness until dawn.
5My flesh is clothed with maggots and caked with dirt.
My skin scabs over and then oozes again.
6My days pass by more swiftly than the shuttle of a weaver's loom.
They come to an end without hope.
Job Addresses God
7Remember that my life is just a breath.[]
My eyes will never again see good fortune.
8The eyes that see me now will no longer watch me.
Your eyes will look for me, but I will not be there.
9As a cloud vanishes and is gone,
so does the one who goes down to the grave.[]
He does not come back up again.
10He never again returns to his home,
and his place will no longer know him.
11That is why I will not restrain my mouth.
I will speak out in the anguish of my spirit.
I will lament in the bitterness of my soul.
12Am I the sea or a great creature of the deep
that you need to put me under guard?
13When I say that my bed will comfort me,
and my couch will help me with my lament,
14then you frighten me with dreams
and terrify me with visions,
15so I would prefer to be strangled,
and I prefer death more than my current existence.[]
16I reject my life. I do not want to live forever.
Leave me alone, for my days are just a vanishing vapor.
17What is man that you make so much of him,
that you pay so much attention to him,
18that you inspect[] him every morning
and test him every minute?
19Why do you never stop watching me?
Why don't you leave me alone long enough for me to swallow my spit?
20If I have sinned, what harm has it done to you,[]
you who keep watch on mankind?
Why have you set me up as your target?
How have I become a burden to you?
21Why do you not forgive my rebellion?
Why do you not take away my guilt?
Soon I will lie down in the dust.
You will search for me, but I will not be there.

John 4:7-26

7A woman from Samaria came to draw water. Jesus said to her, “Give me a drink.” 8(His disciples had gone into town to buy food.)
9The Samaritan woman said to him, “How is it that you, a Jew, ask for a drink from me, a Samaritan woman?” (For Jews do not associate with Samaritans.)
10Jesus answered her, “If you knew the gift of God and who it is that is saying to you, ‘Give me a drink,’ you would have asked him, and he would have given you living water.”
11“Sir,” she said, “you don't even have a bucket, and the well is deep. So where do you get this living water? 12You are not greater than our father Jacob, are you? He gave us this well and drank from it himself, as did his sons and his animals.”
13Jesus answered her, “Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again, 14but whoever drinks the water I will give him will never be thirsty ever again. Rather, the water I will give him will become in him a spring of water, bubbling up to eternal life.”
15“Sir, give me this water,” the woman said to him, “so I won't get thirsty and have to keep coming here to draw water.”
16Jesus told her, “Go, call your husband, and come back here.”
17“I have no husband,” the woman answered.
Jesus said to her, “You are right when you say, ‘I have no husband.’ 18In fact, you have had five husbands, and the man you have now is not your husband. What you have said is true.”
19“Sir,” the woman replied, “I see that you are a prophet. 20Our fathers worshipped on this mountain, but you Jews insist that the place where we must worship is in Jerusalem.”
21Jesus said to her, “Believe me, woman, a time is coming when you will not worship the Father on this mountain or in Jerusalem. 22You Samaritans worship what you do not know. We worship what we do know, because salvation is from the Jews. 23But a time is coming and now is here when the real worshippers will worship the Father in spirit and in truth, for those are the kind of worshippers the Father seeks. 24God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship in spirit and in truth.”
25The woman said to him, “I know that Messiah is coming” (the one called Christ). “When he comes, he will explain everything to us.”
26Jesus said to her, “I, the one speaking to you, am he.”
