Daily Lectionary

April 26, 2025

These daily readings from the EHV follow the one-year daily lectionary provided in Christian Worship: Hymnal, the Lutheran Service Book, and the Treasury of Daily Prayer. In this lectionary, two readings of 15-25 verses each are provided for each day. Under this plan, nearly all of the New Testament and approximately one-third of the Old Testament are read each year. These readings fit well within the daily offices of Matins, Vespers, or Compline as daily family devotions.

Exodus 19:1-25

Israel at Sinai
191In the third month after the Israelites had left the land of Egypt, on that same day of the month, they came to the Wilderness of Sinai. 2After they set out from Rephidim and came to the Wilderness of Sinai, they camped in the wilderness. Israel camped there in front of the mountain.
3Moses went up to God, and the Lord called to him from the mountain, “This is what you are to say to the house of Jacob and to tell the people of Israel: 4‘You have seen what I did to the Egyptians and how I carried you on eagles' wings and brought you to myself. 5Now if you will carefully listen to my voice and keep my covenant, then you will be my special treasure out of all the nations, although the entire earth is mine. 6You will be my kingdom of priests and my holy nation.’ These are the words that you are to speak to the Israelites.”
7Moses went and summoned the elders of the people, and he set before them all these words that the Lord had commanded him. 8All the people answered together, “Everything that the Lord has said, we will do.”
Moses brought back the people's words to the Lord. 9The Lord said to Moses, “Look, I will come to you in a dense cloud so that the people will hear when I speak with you, and then they will always believe you.” Moses told the people's words to the Lord.
10The Lord said to Moses, “Go to the people. Consecrate them today and tomorrow, and have them wash their clothes. 11Be ready by the third day, for on the third day the Lord will come down on Mount Sinai in the sight of all the people. 12You shall set boundaries for the people all around the mountain. Tell them: ‘Be careful that you do not go up onto the mountain or touch the edge of it.’ Whoever touches the mountain must certainly be put to death. 13No one's hand is to touch such a person, but that person is to be stoned to death or shot with arrows. No such animal or person shall be allowed to live. But when the special ram's horn sounds a long blast, the people may come up to the mountain.”
14Moses went down from the mountain to the people. He consecrated the people, and they washed their clothes. 15He said to the people, “Be ready by the third day. Do not come near a woman.”[]
16On the third day, when morning came, there was thunder and lightning. A thick cloud was over the mountain, and there was a very loud blast of a ram's horn. All the people in the camp trembled. 17Moses brought the people out of the camp to meet God, and they stood at the foot of the mountain. 18All of Mount Sinai was covered with smoke, because the Lord descended on it in fire. Its smoke went up like the smoke from a kiln, and the whole mountain trembled violently. 19When the sound of the ram's horn grew louder and louder, Moses spoke, and God answered him in the thunder. 20The Lord came down on Mount Sinai, at the top of the mountain. The Lord then called Moses to the top of the mountain, and Moses went up.
21The Lord said to Moses, “Go down and warn the people not to break through to see the Lord. If they do, many of them will fall. 22Even the priests, who approach the Lord, must consecrate themselves so that the Lord does not break out against them.”
23Moses said to the Lord, “The people cannot come up to Mount Sinai, because you warned, ‘Set boundaries around the mountain and treat it as holy.’”
24The Lord said to him, “Go down and bring Aaron up with you, but the priests and the people must not break through to come up to the Lord, so that the Lord will not break out against them.”
25So Moses went down to the people and told them these things.

Hebrews 13:1-21

Live to Please God
131Continue to show brotherly love. 2Do not fail to show love to strangers, for by doing this some have welcomed angels without realizing it. 3Remember those in prison, as if you were fellow prisoners, and those who are mistreated, as if you yourselves were also suffering bodily.
4Marriage is to be held in honor by all, and the marriage bed is to be kept undefiled, for God will judge sexually immoral people and adulterers. 5Keep your life free from the love of money, and be content with what you have. For God has said:
I will never leave you,
and I will never forsake you.[]
6So then we say with confidence:
The Lord is my helper, and I will not be afraid.
What will man do to me?[]
7Remember your leaders, who spoke the word of God to you. Carefully consider the outcome of their way of life and imitate their faith. 8Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever. 9Do not be carried away by all kinds of strange teachings. For it is good for our hearts to be strengthened by grace, not by foods, which are of no help to those who make them a way of life.
10We have an altar from which those who minister at the tent have no right to eat. 11For the high priest brings the blood of the animals sacrificed for sins into the Most Holy Place, and then their bodies are burned outside the camp. 12Jesus suffered outside the gate for this reason: to sanctify people by his own blood. 13So then let us go to him, outside of the camp, bearing his disgrace. 14For we do not have a permanent city here, but we are looking for the city that is coming. 15Through Jesus, therefore, let us constantly offer to God a sacrifice of praise, that is, the fruit of lips that confess his name. 16And do not forget to do good and share with others, for with such sacrifices God is pleased.
17Obey your leaders and submit to them, for they are keeping watch over your souls as men who will give an account. Obey them, so that they may do this with joy and not with groaning,[] for that would be of no benefit to you.
18Pray for us, because we are sure that we have a good conscience, and because in everything we want to conduct ourselves in an honorable way. 19I urge you to do this even more, so that I may be restored to you quickly.
Conclusion
20Now may the God of peace, who brought back from the dead our Lord Jesus, that great Shepherd of the sheep, in connection with his blood, which established the eternal testament[]21may he equip you with every good thing[] to do his will, as he works in us[] what is pleasing in his sight through Jesus Christ. To him be glory forever and ever. Amen.
