Daily Lectionary

May 2, 2025

These daily readings from the EHV follow the one-year daily lectionary provided in Christian Worship: Hymnal, the Lutheran Service Book, and the Treasury of Daily Prayer. In this lectionary, two readings of 15-25 verses each are provided for each day. Under this plan, nearly all of the New Testament and approximately one-third of the Old Testament are read each year. These readings fit well within the daily offices of Matins, Vespers, or Compline as daily family devotions.

Exodus 31:1-18

The Craftsmen
311The Lord spoke to Moses: 2“Look, here is Bezalel, the son of Uri, the son of Hur, from the tribe of Judah. I have called him by name. 3I have filled him with the Spirit of God, with wisdom, understanding, and knowledge, and with skill in all kinds of crafts. 4He has the ability to create designs. He works with gold, silver, and bronze. 5He is able to cut and engrave precious stones and mount them. He can also carve wood. He works skillfully in all kinds of crafts.
6“Not only that, but I have also appointed Oholiab son of Ahisamak, from the tribe of Dan, to work with him. I have put wisdom into the heart of all the skilled craftsmen, so that they may make everything that I have commanded you: 7the Tent of Meeting, the Ark of the Testimony, the atonement seat that is on it, all the furnishings for the tent, 8the table and its vessels and accessories, the pure gold lampstand with all its utensils, the altar for incense, 9the altar for burnt offerings with all its utensils, the basin and its pedestal, 10the finely woven garments (the holy garments for Aaron the priest), the garments for his sons to minister in the priest's office, 11the anointing oil, and the incense made of fragrant spices for the Holy Place. The skilled craftsmen shall do everything just as I commanded.”
The Sabbath
12The Lord spoke to Moses. He said, 13“Speak to the people of Israel. Tell them, ‘You must observe my Sabbaths diligently, because the Sabbath is a sign between me and you throughout your generations, so that you may know that I am the Lord, who sets you apart as holy. 14So you shall observe the Sabbath, for it is holy to you. Everyone who profanes it must certainly be put to death, for if anyone does any work on the Sabbath, his life shall be cut off from among his people. 15On six days work may be done, but the seventh day is a sabbath of complete rest, holy to the Lord. Whoever does any work on the Sabbath day must certainly be put to death. 16Therefore, the people of Israel shall observe the Sabbath by keeping the Sabbath throughout their generations as a perpetual covenant. 17It is a permanent sign between me and the people of Israel, for in six days the Lord made heaven and earth, and on the seventh day he rested and was refreshed.’”
18When the Lord had finished speaking with Moses on Mount Sinai, he gave him the two tablets of the Testimony, stone tablets, written with God's finger.

Luke 6:1-19

Lord of the Sabbath
61When Jesus was going through the grain fields on a Sabbath day, his disciples were picking heads of grain, rubbing them in their hands, and eating them. 2But some of the Pharisees said, “Why are you doing what is not lawful on the Sabbath?”
3Jesus answered them, “Haven't you read what David did when he was hungry (he and his companions)? 4He went into the house of God, took and ate the Bread of the Presence, which is lawful only for the priests to eat. He also gave some to his companions.” 5Jesus also said to them, “The Son of Man is Lord of the Sabbath.”
Jesus Heals a Man With a Withered Hand
6On another Sabbath he went into the synagogue and taught. A man was there whose right hand was withered. 7The experts in the law and the Pharisees were watching him closely, to see if he would heal on the Sabbath. They wanted to find a reason to accuse him. 8But he always knew their thoughts. He said to the man with the withered hand, “Stand up and step forward.”[] He got up and stood there. 9Then Jesus said to them, “I will ask you something. Is it lawful on the Sabbath to do good or to do evil, to save life or to destroy it?” 10He looked around at all of them and told the man, “Stretch out your hand.” He did, and his hand was restored. 11They were filled with rage and began discussing with one another what they could do to Jesus.
Jesus Sends Out the Twelve
12It happened in those days that Jesus went up on the mountain to pray, and he spent all night in prayer to God. 13When it was day, he summoned his disciples and chose twelve of them, whom he also called apostles: 14Simon, whom he also named Peter, and his brother Andrew; James and John; Philip and Bartholomew; 15Matthew and Thomas; James the son of Alphaeus, also Simon, who was called the Zealot; 16Judas the son of James, and Judas Iscariot, who became a traitor.
Jesus Heals Many
17He went down with them and stood on a level place with a large crowd of his disciples, and a large number of people from all Judea and Jerusalem, as well as from the coastal area of Tyre and Sidon. These people came to listen to him and to be healed of their diseases. 18Those who were troubled by unclean spirits were also cured. 19The whole crowd kept trying to touch him, because power was going out from him and healing them all.
