Daily Lectionary

June 7, 2025

These daily readings from the EHV follow the one-year daily lectionary provided in Christian Worship: Hymnal, the Lutheran Service Book, and the Treasury of Daily Prayer. In this lectionary, two readings of 15-25 verses each are provided for each day. Under this plan, nearly all of the New Testament and approximately one-third of the Old Testament are read each year. These readings fit well within the daily offices of Matins, Vespers, or Compline as daily family devotions.

Numbers 20:22-21:9

The Death of Aaron
22The entire community of the Israelites set out from Kadesh and came to Mount Hor. 23The Lord spoke to Moses and Aaron at Mount Hor along the border of Edom's territory. He said, 24“Aaron will be gathered to his people, because he cannot enter into the land which I have given to the Israelites, because you rebelled against my command at the waters of Meribah. 25Take Aaron and Eleazar his son and bring them up to the top of Mount Hor. 26Remove Aaron's garments and put them on Eleazar his son. Aaron will be gathered to his fathers and die there.”
27Moses did just as the Lord commanded. They went up to the top of Mount Hor in the sight of the entire community. 28Moses removed Aaron's garments and put them on Eleazar his son. Aaron died there on the top of the mountain, and Moses and Eleazar came down from the mountain. 29When the entire community saw that Aaron had passed away, the entire house of Israel wept for Aaron for thirty days.
Arad Destroyed
211The Canaanite king of Arad, who lived in the Negev, heard that Israel was coming on the road to Atharim. He fought against Israel and captured some of them. 2Israel made this vow to the Lord: “If you will indeed give these people into our hands, then we will totally destroy their cities.” 3The Lord listened to Israel's voice and gave the Canaanites into their hands. The Israelites totally destroyed them and their cities. They named the place Hormah.[]
The Bronze Snake
4They set out from Mount Hor along the road to the Red Sea to go around the land of Edom, but the people became very impatient along the way. 5The people spoke against God and against Moses, “Why have you brought us up out of Egypt to die in the wilderness? Look, there is no food! There is no water! And we are disgusted by this worthless food!”[]
6The Lord sent venomous[] snakes among the people, and the snakes bit the people. As a result many people from Israel died. 7The people went to Moses and said, “We have sinned, because we have spoken against the Lord and against you. Pray to the Lord to take the snakes away from us.” So Moses prayed on behalf of the people.
8The Lord said to Moses, “Make a venomous snake and put it on a pole. If anyone who is bitten looks at it, he will live.” 9Moses made a bronze snake and put it on the pole. If a snake had bitten anyone, if that person looked at the bronze snake, he lived.

Luke 20:45-21:19

Beware
45While all the people were listening, Jesus said to his disciples, 46“Beware of the experts in the law, who like to walk around in long robes and love greetings in the marketplaces, the best seats in the synagogues, and the places of honor at banquets. 47They devour widows' houses and offer long prayers to look good. They will receive greater condemnation.”
The Poor Widow Gave More
211Jesus looked up and saw rich people putting their gifts into the offering box. 2He saw a poor widow there putting in two small coins.[] 3He said, “Truly I tell you, this poor widow put in more than everyone, 4for all these put in some of their leftovers as gifts to God,[] but she, out of her poverty, put in all that she had to live on.”
The Destruction of Jerusalem and the End of the World
5As some were talking about the temple, how it was decorated with beautiful stones and offerings, Jesus said, 6“These things that you see here—the days will come when there will not be one stone left on another—every one will be thrown down.”
7They asked him, “Teacher, when will these things happen? And what is the sign that these things are about to happen?”
8He said, “Watch out so that you are not deceived! For many will come in my name, saying, ‘I am he,’ and ‘The time is near.’ Do not follow them. 9Whenever you hear of wars and revolutions, do not be terrified, for these things must happen first, but the end will not be right then.”
10Then he said to them, “Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. 11There will be great earthquakes, famines, and plagues in various places. There will be horrifying sights and great signs from heaven. 12But before all these things, they will lay their hands on you and will persecute you, handing you over to synagogues and prisons, bringing you before kings and governors for my name's sake. 13It will turn out to be your opportunity to testify. 14So make up your minds not to prepare beforehand how to defend yourselves, 15for I will give you words and wisdom that none of your adversaries will be able to withstand or contradict. 16You will be betrayed even by parents, brothers,[] relatives, and friends. They will put some of you to death. 17You will be hated by all people for my name's sake. 18But not a hair of your head will perish. 19By patient endurance you will gain your lives.
