Daily Lectionary

July 7, 2025

These daily readings from the EHV follow the one-year daily lectionary provided in Christian Worship: Hymnal, the Lutheran Service Book, and the Treasury of Daily Prayer. In this lectionary, two readings of 15-25 verses each are provided for each day. Under this plan, nearly all of the New Testament and approximately one-third of the Old Testament are read each year. These readings fit well within the daily offices of Matins, Vespers, or Compline as daily family devotions.

Judges 2:6-23

6When Joshua dismissed the people, each of the descendants of Israel went to his own inheritance to take possession of the land. 7The people served the Lord all the days of Joshua and all the days of the elders who outlived Joshua, those who had seen all the great deeds that the Lord had done for Israel.
8Joshua son of Nun, the servant of the Lord, died at the age of one hundred ten years. 9They buried him within the borders of his inheritance, in Timnath Heres,[] in the hill country of Ephraim, north of Mount Ga'ash.
The Cycle That Repeats Itself Throughout Judges
10After that whole generation had been gathered to their fathers, another generation arose after them, who did not know the Lord or the deeds that he had done for Israel. 11The people of Israel committed evil in the eyes of the Lord. They served the Baals, 12and they abandoned the Lord, the God of their fathers, who had brought them out of the land of Egypt. They went after other gods from among the gods of the peoples who were around them. They bowed down to them, and they angered the Lord. 13They abandoned the Lord and served the Baals and the Ashtartes.[]
14So the anger of the Lord burned against Israel, and he delivered them into the hand of raiders, who plundered them. He sold them into the hand of their enemies around them, and they were not able to stand up in the face of their enemies. 15Whenever the men of Israel went out, the hand of the Lord was against them to bring disaster on them, just as the Lord had said to them and just as the Lord had sworn to them. So they were greatly distressed.
16Nevertheless, the Lord raised up judges,[] who saved them from the hand of those who plundered them, 17but they did not listen even to the judges! Instead, they prostituted themselves to other gods and bowed down to them. They quickly turned from the way in which their fathers, who had obeyed the commands of the Lord, had once walked. This generation did not act the same way their fathers had acted.
18Whenever the Lord raised up a judge for them, the Lord was with that judge and saved them from their enemies during all the days of that judge, because the Lord had compassion when he heard their groaning under their tormenters and oppressors.
19But then, after the death of the judge, Israel would turn back and become more corrupt than their fathers by going after other gods, by serving them, and by worshipping them. They refused to let go of their practices and their shameless ways.
20So the anger of the Lord burned against Israel. He said, “Because this nation has violated my covenant, which I commanded to their fathers, and because they did not obey my voice, 21I will no longer drive out from among them a single one of the nations that Joshua left unconquered when he died. 22I will do this in order to test Israel by means of them. Will Israel keep the way of the Lord and walk upon it as their fathers kept it, or not?” 23So the Lord gave those nations a reprieve, and he did not drive them out quickly. He did not hand them over to Joshua.

Acts 13:13-41

At Pisidian Antioch
13Paul and his companions set sail from Paphos and came to Perga in Pamphylia. John, however, left them and returned to Jerusalem. 14But they went on from Perga and arrived at Antioch in Pisidia. They went into the synagogue on the Sabbath day and sat down. 15After the reading of the Law and the Prophets, the leaders of the synagogue sent a message to them, saying, “Gentlemen,[] brothers, if you have a word of encouragement for the people, say it.”
16Then Paul stood up, motioned with his hand, and said, “Men of Israel and you who fear God, listen. 17The God of the people of Israel chose our fathers and made them a great people during their stay in the land of Egypt, and with his uplifted arm, he led them out of it. 18He put up with them[] for about forty years in the wilderness. 19Then he destroyed seven nations in the land of Canaan, and he gave their land to his people as an inheritance. 20All this took about 450 years. After that, he gave them judges[] until the time of Samuel the prophet.
21“Then the people asked for a king, and God gave them Saul, son of Kish, a man of the tribe of Benjamin, for forty years. 22After removing him, he raised up David as their king. God testified about him: ‘I have found David the son of Jesse to be a man after my own heart. He will do all that I want him to do.’[]
23“From this man's descendants[] God brought the Savior Jesus to Israel, in keeping with his promise. 24Before he appeared publicly, John had preached a baptism of repentance to all the people of Israel. 25As John was finishing his course, he said, ‘Who do you suppose I am? I am not that One. But look! That One is coming after me, and I am not worthy to untie the sandals on his feet.’[]
26“Gentlemen, brothers, sons of Abraham's family, and those among you who fear God, this message of salvation has been sent to you.[] 27The people of Jerusalem and their rulers did not recognize him, and by condemning him they fulfilled the statements of the prophets that are read every Sabbath. 28Though they found no grounds for a death sentence, they asked Pilate to have him executed. 29When they carried out everything that was written about him, they took him down from the cross[] and laid him in a tomb. 30But God raised him from the dead, 31and for many days he was seen by those who had come up with him from Galilee to Jerusalem. These same individuals are now his witnesses to the people.
32“We are preaching to you the good news about the promise that was made to our fathers. 33God has fulfilled this promise for us, their children, by raising up Jesus. As it is also written in the second Psalm:
You are my Son.
Today I have begotten you.[]
34“That God would raise him from the dead never again to be subject to decay, God said in this way:
I will give you the holy and sure blessings promised to David.[]
35“Therefore he also says in another place:
You will not let your Holy One see decay.[]
36“For David, after he had served God's purpose in his own generation, fell asleep, was laid to rest with his fathers, and saw decay. 37But the One God raised did not see decay.
38“So, gentlemen, brothers, let it be known to you that through this Jesus forgiveness of sins is being proclaimed to you, also forgiveness from everything from which you could not be justified through the law of Moses. 39In this Jesus, everyone who believes is justified. 40So watch out that what is said in the prophets does not happen to you:
41Look, you scoffers,
be amazed and perish!
For I am going to do something in your days,
something you would never believe,
even if someone were to explain it to you.”[]
