Daily Lectionary

March 12, 2026

These daily readings from the EHV follow the one-year daily lectionary provided in Christian Worship: Hymnal, the Lutheran Service Book, and the Treasury of Daily Prayer. In this lectionary, two readings of 15-25 verses each are provided for each day. Under this plan, nearly all of the New Testament and approximately one-third of the Old Testament are read each year. These readings fit well within the daily offices of Matins, Vespers, or Compline as daily family devotions.

Genesis 39:1-23

Joseph in Egypt
391When Joseph was brought down to Egypt, Potiphar the Egyptian, who was an officer[] of Pharaoh and the captain of the guard, bought Joseph from the Ishmaelites who had brought him down to Egypt. 2The Lord was with Joseph, and he became successful. He served in the house of his master the Egyptian. 3His master saw that the Lord was with him, and that the Lord made everything that he touched a success. 4Joseph found favor in his sight. Joseph served him, and he made Joseph manager of his household. He put Joseph in charge of everything.
5From the time that Potiphar made him manager of his household, in charge of everything that he had, the Lord blessed the Egyptian's household for Joseph's sake, and the blessing of the Lord rested on everything that he had, both in the house and in the fields. 6So he left Joseph in charge of everything that he had. He did not concern himself with anything except the food that he ate.
Joseph was well built and handsome. 7Sometime after all this, his master's wife had her eye on Joseph, and she said, “Come, lie down with me.”
8But he refused and said to his master's wife, “Look, my master does not concern himself with anything that has been entrusted to me in the house. He has put me in charge of everything that he has. 9He has no one in this house greater than I am, and he has not withheld anything from me except you, because you are his wife. How then could I do such a great evil and sin against God?”
10She kept speaking to Joseph day after day, but he would not listen to her. He would not lie down beside her or even be with her. 11But one day when he went into the house to do his work, none of the men of the household were there inside the house. 12She caught him by his garment and said, “Come, lie down with me!” He left behind his garment in her hand and ran outside.
13When she saw that he had left his garment in her hand and had run outside, 14she called to the men of her household and said to them, “Look, my husband has brought a Hebrew man in to put us to shame. He came in to lie down with me, but I screamed loudly. 15When he heard me scream, he left behind his garment with me and ran outside.”
16She kept his garment beside her until his master came home. 17This is what she told him: “The Hebrew servant, whom you have brought to us, came to me to put me to shame ˻and said to me, ‘Let me lie down with you.’˼[] 18And look, when I screamed and cried out, he left behind his garment with me and ran outside.”
19As soon as his master heard the words that his wife spoke to him, saying, “This is what your servant did to me,” he became very angry. 20Joseph's master took him and put him into the prison where the king's prisoners were confined, so Joseph was kept in prison there.
21But the Lord was with Joseph. He showed mercy to him and gave him favor in the sight of the warden of the prison. 22The warden of the prison made Joseph responsible for all the prisoners who were in the prison. Joseph was responsible for whatever they did there. 23The warden of the prison did not pay attention to anything that was under his authority, because the Lord was with Joseph, and the Lord made everything that he did succeed.

Mark 10:13-31

Jesus Loves Little Children
13Some people began bringing little children to Jesus so that he would touch them. But the disciples rebuked them. 14When Jesus saw this, he was indignant. He said, “Let the little children come to me! Do not hinder them, because the kingdom of God belongs to such as these. 15Amen I tell you: Whoever will not receive the kingdom of God like a little child will never enter it.” 16And he took the little children in his arms, laid his hands on them, and blessed them.
The Rich Young Ruler
17As Jesus was setting out on a journey, one man ran up to him and knelt in front of him. He asked, “Good teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?”
18Jesus said to him, “Why do you call me good? No one is good except one—God. 19You know the commandments. ‘You shall not murder. You shall not commit adultery. You shall not steal. You shall not give false testimony. You shall not defraud. Honor your father and mother.’”[]
20The man replied, “Teacher, I have kept all these since I was a child.”
21Jesus looked at him, loved him, and said to him, “One thing you lack. Go, sell whatever you have, and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.”
22When he heard this, he looked sad and went away grieving, because he had great wealth. 23Jesus looked around and said to his disciples, “How hard it will be for those who have riches to enter the kingdom of God!”
24The disciples were amazed at his words. But Jesus told them again, “Children, how hard it is for those who trust in their riches to enter the kingdom of God! 25It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God.”
26They were even more astonished and said to one another, “Who then can be saved?”
27Jesus looked at them and said, “For people, it is impossible, but not for God, because all things are possible for God.”
28Peter began to say to him, “See, we have left everything and followed you.”
29Jesus said, “Amen I tell you: There is no one who has left home or brothers or sisters or mother or father or children or fields, for my sake and for the sake of the gospel, 30who now at this time will fail to receive one hundred times as much: houses, brothers, sisters, mothers, children, and fields (along with persecutions)—and in the coming age: eternal life. 31But many who are first will be last, and the last will be first.”
