Daily Lectionary

October 26, 2027

These daily readings from the EHV follow the one-year daily lectionary provided in Christian Worship: Hymnal, the Lutheran Service Book, and the Treasury of Daily Prayer. In this lectionary, two readings of 15-25 verses each are provided for each day. Under this plan, nearly all of the New Testament and approximately one-third of the Old Testament are read each year. These readings fit well within the daily offices of Matins, Vespers, or Compline as daily family devotions.

Deuteronomy 28:1-22

The Blessings for Obedience
281If you fully obey the voice of the Lord your God by carefully carrying out all his commandments that I am giving you today, then the Lord your God will set you high above all the nations of the earth. 2All of the following blessings will come upon you and overtake you, if you listen to the voice of the Lord your God:
3You will be blessed in the city and blessed in the fields.
4You will be blessed in the fruit of your womb, in the fruit of your soil, and in the fruit of your animals: the calves of your cattle and the lambs of your flock.
5You will be blessed in your basket and in your kneading trough.
6You will be blessed when you come in, and you will be blessed when you go out.
7The Lord will cause your enemies who rise up against you to be defeated before you. From one direction they will come out against you, but they will flee from you in seven directions.
8The Lord will command a blessing on you in your storehouses and in regard to every action of your hand, and he will bless you in the land that the Lord your God is giving you.
9The Lord will establish you as his holy people, just as he swore to you, if you keep the commandments of the Lord your God and you walk in his ways.
10Then all the people of the earth will see that the name of the Lord has been proclaimed over you, and they will fear you.
11The Lord will cause you to be overflowing with good things: with the fruit of your womb, the fruit of your animals, and the fruit of the soil of the land that the Lord swore to your fathers to give you.
12The Lord will open for you his good storehouse, the heavens, by giving rain for your land in its season and by blessing all the work of your hand.
Then you will cause many nations to borrow from you, but you yourself will not borrow.
13The Lord will make you the head and not the tail, and you will be only at the top and never at the bottom, if you conscientiously obey the commandments of the Lord your God that I am commanding you today to carry out, 14and if you do not turn away to the right or to the left from all the words that I am commanding you today, to walk after other gods and serve them.
The Curses for Disobedience
15If you do not listen to the voice of the Lord your God and do not carefully carry out all of his commandments and statutes that I am commanding you today, then all these curses will come upon you and overtake you.
16You will be cursed in the city, and you will be cursed in the fields.
17You will be cursed in your basket and in your kneading trough.
18You will be cursed in the fruit of your womb and in the fruit of your soil, in the calves of your cattle and in the lambs of your flock.
19You will be cursed when you come in, and you will be cursed when you go out.
20The Lord will send on you a curse and confusion and opposition in every undertaking of your hand that you carry out, until you are destroyed and until you quickly perish, because of the evil you have done by forsaking me.
21The Lord will cause epidemics to cling to you until he has removed you from your land that you are going to possess.
22The Lord will strike you with wasting diseases, fever, and inflammation, with intense heat and with drought,[] and with blight and with mildew.[] They will pursue you until you perish.

Matthew 18:1-20

Who Is the Greatest?
181At that time the disciples approached Jesus and asked, “Who then is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven?” 2Jesus called a little child, had him stand in the middle of them, 3and said, “Amen I tell you: Unless you change and become like children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven. 4Whoever humbles himself like this little child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven. 5And whoever receives a little child like this one in my name receives me.
6“But, if anyone causes one of these little ones who believe in me to sin,[] it would be better for him to have a huge millstone hung around his neck and to be drowned in the depths of the sea. 7Woe to the world because of temptations to sin. Temptations must come, but woe to that person through whom the temptation comes!
8“If your hand or your foot causes you to sin,[] cut it off and throw it away. It is better for you to enter life crippled or lame than to be thrown into the eternal fire with two hands or two feet. 9If your eye causes you to sin, pluck it out and throw it away from you. It is better for you to enter life with one eye than to be thrown into hell fire with two eyes. 10See to it that you do not look down on one of these little ones, because I tell you that their angels in heaven always see the face of my Father who is in heaven. 11For the Son of Man came to save what was lost.[]
The Lost Sheep
12“What do you think? If a man has a hundred sheep, and one of them wanders away, will he not leave the ninety-nine on the hills and go looking for the one that wandered away? 13If he finds it—Amen I tell you—he rejoices more over that one sheep than over the ninety-nine that did not wander away. 14In the same way, your Father in heaven does not want even one of these little ones to perish.
Show Your Brother His Sin
15“If your brother sins against you, go and show him his sin just between the two of you. If he listens to you, you have regained your brother. 16But if he will not listen, take one or two others along with you, so that ‘every matter[] may be established by the testimony of two or three witnesses.’[] 17If he refuses to listen to them, tell it to the church. And, if he refuses to listen even to the church, then treat him as an unbeliever or a tax collector. 18Amen I tell you: Whatever you bind on earth will be[] bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven. 19Amen I tell you again: If two of you on earth agree to ask for anything, it will be done for them by my Father who is in heaven. 20In fact where two or three have gathered together in my name, there I am among them.”
