Daily Lectionary

August 13, 2028

These daily readings from the EHV follow the one-year daily lectionary provided in Christian Worship: Hymnal, the Lutheran Service Book, and the Treasury of Daily Prayer. In this lectionary, two readings of 15-25 verses each are provided for each day. Under this plan, nearly all of the New Testament and approximately one-third of the Old Testament are read each year. These readings fit well within the daily offices of Matins, Vespers, or Compline as daily family devotions.

1 Samuel 31:1-13

The Death of Saul and Jonathan
311In the meantime, the Philistines were fighting against Israel, and the men of Israel fled from the Philistines and fell mortally wounded at Mount Gilboa. 2The Philistines were closing in on Saul and his sons. They struck down Jonathan, Abinadab, and Malkishua, the sons of Saul. 3The attack directed at Saul was fierce. The archers targeted him and hit him, and he was seriously wounded.
4Then Saul said to his armor bearer, “Draw your sword and run me through with it, so that these uncircumcised fellows cannot come and run me through and abuse me!”
But his armor bearer would not do it, because he was too afraid. So Saul took his own sword and fell on it. 5When his armor bearer saw that Saul was dead, he too fell on his sword and died with him. 6So Saul died together with his three sons, his armor bearer, and all his men, all on that same day.
7When the men of Israel from the other side of the valley and those from beyond the Jordan saw that the men of Israel had fled and that Saul and his sons were dead, they abandoned their cities and fled. Then the Philistines came and lived in them.
8On the next day, when the Philistines came to strip those who had been killed in the battle, they found Saul and his three sons fallen at Mount Gilboa. 9They cut off his head, stripped off his armor, and sent messengers throughout the land of the Philistines to carry the good news to the temple of their idols and to the people. 10They put his armor and weapons in the temple of the Ashtartes,[] and they fastened his body to the wall of Beth Shan.
11When the inhabitants of Jabesh Gilead heard what the Philistines had done to Saul, 12all the strong, courageous men set out, traveled all night, and took the body of Saul and the bodies of his sons down from the wall of Beth Shan. They returned to Jabesh and burned them there. 13They took their bones and buried them under the tamarisk tree in Jabesh and fasted seven days.

1 Corinthians 7:1-24

Celibacy, Self-Control, and Marriage
71Now concerning the things you wrote: It is good for a man not to touch[] a woman. 2But because of sexual sins, each man is to have his own wife, and each woman is to have her own husband. 3The husband is to fulfill his obligation to his wife, and likewise the wife to her husband. 4The wife does not have authority over her own body—her husband does. Likewise, the husband does not have authority over his own body—his wife does. 5Do not deprive one another, unless you both agree to do so for a time, in order to devote yourselves to[] prayer and then come together again, so that Satan does not tempt you because of your lack of self-control. 6However, I say this as a concession, not as a command. 7For[] I wish all people were like me, but each person has his own gift from God. One person is blessed in this way, another in a different way.
8I say to the unmarried and to widows that it is good for them if they remain as I am. 9But if they do not have self-control, they should marry, because it is better to marry than to burn with desire.
10Next I command the married (it is the Lord's command not mine): A wife is not to leave her husband 11(but if she does leave, she is to remain unmarried or be reconciled to her husband), and a husband is not to divorce[] his wife.
12But I, not the Lord, say to the rest: If any brother has an unbelieving wife, and she is willing to go on living with him, he is not to divorce her. 13If any woman has an unbelieving husband, and he is willing to go on living with her, she is not to divorce her husband. 14For the unbelieving husband has been sanctified in connection with his wife, and the unbelieving wife has been sanctified in connection with her husband.[] Otherwise, your children would be unclean, but as it is, they are holy. 15But if the unbeliever leaves, let him leave. The brother or the sister is not bound in such cases, and God has called us[] to live in peace. 16For how do you know, wife, whether you will save your husband? Or how do you know, husband, whether you will save your wife?
17However, each person is to live in the situation the Lord assigned to him—the situation he was in when God called him to faith. I give this same command in all the churches. 18If a man was circumcised when he was called, he should not become uncircumcised. If a man was uncircumcised when he was called, he should not get circumcised. 19Circumcision is nothing, and uncircumcision is nothing, but keeping God's commands is important. 20Let each person stay in that calling in which he was called. 21Were you a slave when you were called? Do not let it bother you. But if you are able to become free, take advantage of it. 22For the slave who was called to be in the Lord is the Lord's freed person. Likewise, the free person who was called is Christ's slave. 23You were bought at a price. Do not become slaves of men. 24Brothers,[] let each person remain before God in the situation he was in when he was called.
