Daily Lectionary

August 18, 2028

These daily readings from the EHV follow the one-year daily lectionary provided in Christian Worship: Hymnal, the Lutheran Service Book, and the Treasury of Daily Prayer. In this lectionary, two readings of 15-25 verses each are provided for each day. Under this plan, nearly all of the New Testament and approximately one-third of the Old Testament are read each year. These readings fit well within the daily offices of Matins, Vespers, or Compline as daily family devotions.

2 Samuel 7:18-29

David's Response to the Covenant
18Then King David went and sat before the Lord and said:
Who am I, Lord God? And what is my house that you have brought me to this point? 19Yet this was a small thing in your eyes, Lord God. You have also spoken about the house of your servant for a long time into the future. Is this the law for the man, Lord God?[]
20What more can David say to you? You know your servant, Lord God. 21Because of your word and according to the plan of your heart, you have carried out this great thing in order to make your servant aware of it. 22Therefore, you are great, Lord God, because there is none like you. There is no God except you, in keeping with everything we have heard with our ears.
23Who is like your people Israel, the one people on earth whom God went out to redeem for himself, to make them his people and to make a name for himself? You yourself did great and awe-inspiring things for your land in the presence of your people, whom you redeemed for yourself from Egypt, in the presence of the nations and their gods.[] 24You established your people Israel for yourself to be your people forever. You, Lord, became their God.
25Now, Lord God, confirm forever the word that you have spoken concerning your servant and concerning his house, and do as you have spoken. 26Your name will be great forever. People will say, “The Lord of Armies is God over Israel.” The house of your servant David will be established before you.
27You, Lord of Armies, the God of Israel, have whispered into the ear[] of your servant, saying, “I will build a house for you.” Therefore, your servant has found the heart to pray to you this prayer. 28Now, Lord God, you are God. Your words are truth. You have promised this good thing to your servant. 29Now, therefore, please bless the house of your servant, so that it will endure forever in your presence. For you, Lord God, have spoken. With your blessing the house of your servant will be blessed forever.

1 Corinthians 10:23-11:16

Live for the Good of Others and for the Glory of God
23“Everything is permitted”[]—but not everything is beneficial. “Everything is permitted”—but not everything builds up. 24Let no one seek his own good, but that of others. 25Eat whatever is sold in the meat market without asking questions for the sake of conscience. 26For “the earth is the Lord's, and everything in it.”[] 27If one of the unbelievers invites you over and you want to go, eat whatever you are served without asking questions for the sake of conscience. 28But if someone says to you, “This is from a sacrifice,” then do not eat it, for the sake of the one who told you and for the sake of conscience.[] 29I mean the other person's conscience, not your own. For why is my freedom judged by someone else's conscience? 30If I eat the food with thankfulness, why am I criticized for something for which I give thanks?
31So whether you eat or drink, or do anything else, do everything to the glory of God. 32Do not give offense to Jews, or Greeks, or God's church, 33just as I also try to please all people in all things, by not seeking what is best for me but for the many, so that they may be saved.
111Be imitators of me, just as I am of Christ.
Concerning Head Coverings at Worship
2I praise you, brothers,[] for remembering me in all things and holding firmly to the teachings[] as I delivered them to you. 3However, I want you to know that Christ is the head of every man, and man is woman's head, and God is Christ's head. 4Every man who prays or prophesies with a covering hanging down from his head dishonors his head. 5But every woman who prays or prophesies with her head uncovered dishonors her head, for it is one and the same thing as being a woman with a shaved head. 6Indeed, if a woman does not wear a head covering, she should cut off her hair too. But if it is shameful for a woman to cut off her hair or shave her head, she should wear a head covering.
7For a man ought not to wear a head covering, because he is the image and glory of God, but woman is man's glory. 8For man is not from woman, but woman from man, 9and man was not created for the woman, but woman for the man. 10For this reason the woman ought to have a symbol of authority on her head,[] because of the angels.
11Nevertheless, in the Lord, woman is not independent of man, nor is man independent of woman. 12For as woman came from man, so also man comes through woman, and all things are from God.
13Judge for yourselves. Is it proper for a woman to pray to God with her head uncovered? 14Doesn't the nature of things itself teach you that if a man has long hair, it is disgraceful for him, 15whereas if a woman has long hair, it is glorious for her? For her long hair has been given to her as a covering. 16But if anyone is inclined to be contentious—we have no such custom, and neither do God's churches.
