Daily Lectionary

September 5, 2024

These daily readings from the EHV follow the one-year daily lectionary provided in Christian Worship: Hymnal, the Lutheran Service Book, and the Treasury of Daily Prayer. In this lectionary, two readings of 15-25 verses each are provided for each day. Under this plan, nearly all of the New Testament and approximately one-third of the Old Testament are read each year. These readings fit well within the daily offices of Matins, Vespers, or Compline as daily family devotions.

2 Kings 2:19-25, 4:1-17

Elisha Demonstrates God's Power
19Then the men of the city said to Elisha, “Look, the site of the city is good, as my lord can see, but the water is bad, and the land deprives people of children.”
20So he said, “Bring me a new dish and put salt in it.” So they brought it to him.
21Then he went out to the spring and threw the salt in. He said, “This is what the Lord says. I have healed this water. No longer will death or loss of children come from it.” 22So the water has remained healed to this day, according to the word which Elisha spoke.
23He went up from there to Bethel. While he was going up on the road, young boys came out from the city and mocked him. They said, “Go up, baldy! Go up, baldy!”
24So he turned around and looked at them and cursed them in the name of the Lord. Then two female bears came out of the woods, and they tore forty-two boys to pieces. 25From there Elisha went to Mount Carmel, and then he returned to Samaria.
Elisha Multiplies the Widow's Oil
41The wife of one of the sons of the prophets cried out to Elisha, “Your servant, my husband, is dead. You know that your servant feared the Lord. But now the moneylender is coming to take my two sons as slaves.”
2Then Elisha said to her, “What can I do for you? Tell me, what do you have in your house?”
She said, “Your servant has nothing at all in the house except a jar of olive oil.”
3He told her, “Go and ask all your neighbors for jars—empty jars. Don't ask for only a few. 4Then go inside and shut the door behind you and your sons. Then pour oil into all the jars. When each one is full, set it aside.”
5So she went and shut the door to her house behind her and her sons. They brought the jars, and she poured. 6When a jar was filled, she said to her son, “Bring me another jar.”
Finally he said, “There aren't any more.” Then the oil stopped.
7So she went and told the man of God. He said, “Go and sell the oil and pay your debt. Then you and your sons can live off what's left.”
Elisha and the Woman of Shunem
8One day Elisha went to Shunem. A wealthy woman lived there, and she urged him to eat a meal with her. So whenever he passed by, he would stop there for a meal.
9Then she said to her husband, “Listen. I know that the man who passes by here all the time is a holy man of God. 10Let's make a small upper room on the roof, and let's put a bed, a table, a chair, and a lamp there for him. Then whenever he comes to us, he can stay there.”
11One day when Elisha came there, he went into the room and lay down. 12Then he said to Gehazi his servant, “Call the woman of Shunem.” He called her, and she stood in front of him.
13Then Elisha said to Gehazi, “Tell her, ‘You have been very concerned about us. What can we do for you? Is there something we can request for you from the king or from the commander of the army?’”
She said, “I am living among my own people.”
14Then he said, “What can be done for her?”
Then Gehazi said, “Well, she has no son, and her husband is old.”
15He said, “Call her.” So he called her, and she stood at the doorway.
16Then he said to her, “At this time next year, you will be holding a son.”
But she said, “No, my lord, you man of God. Do not deceive your servant.”
17But the woman conceived, and she gave birth to a son at that same time of year, just as Elisha said to her.

Ephesians 4:25-5:14

25Therefore, after you put away lying, let each of you speak truthfully with your neighbor, because we are all members of one body. 26“Be angry, yet do not sin.”[] Do not let the sun go down while you are still angry. 27Do not give the Devil an opportunity. 28Let the one who has been stealing steal no longer. Instead, let him work hard doing what is good with his own hands, so that he has something to share with a person who is in need. 29Do not let any unwholesome talk come from your mouths. Say only what is beneficial when there is a need to build up others, so that it will be a blessing to those who hear. 30Do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, with whom you were sealed for the day of redemption. 31Get rid of every kind of bitterness, rage, anger, quarreling, and slander, along with every kind of malice. 32Instead, be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving one another, just as God in Christ has forgiven us.[]
51Therefore, be imitators of God as his dearly loved children. 2And walk in love, just as Christ loved us and gave himself for us, as a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God.
3But do not let sexual immorality, any kind of impurity, or greed even be mentioned among you, as is proper for saints. 4Obscenity, foolish talk, and coarse joking are also out of place. Instead, give thanks. 5Certainly you are aware of this: No immoral, impure, or greedy person—such a person is an idolater—has an inheritance in the kingdom of Christ, who is God.[] 6Let no one deceive you with empty words. It is because of these things that the wrath of God is coming on the sons of disobedience. 7So do not share in what they do.
8For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Walk as children of light, 9for the fruit of the light consists in all goodness, righteousness, and truth. 10Try to learn what is pleasing to the Lord, 11and do not participate in fruitless deeds of darkness. Instead, expose them. 12For it is shameful even to mention the things that are done by people in secret. 13But everything exposed by the light becomes visible, for it is light that makes things visible. 14Therefore it is said, “Awake, sleeper, rise from the dead, and Christ will shine on you.”
