Daily Lectionary

September 6, 2024

These daily readings from the EHV follow the one-year daily lectionary provided in Christian Worship: Hymnal, the Lutheran Service Book, and the Treasury of Daily Prayer. In this lectionary, two readings of 15-25 verses each are provided for each day. Under this plan, nearly all of the New Testament and approximately one-third of the Old Testament are read each year. These readings fit well within the daily offices of Matins, Vespers, or Compline as daily family devotions.

2 Kings 4:8-22, 32-37

Elisha and the Woman of Shunem
8One day Elisha went to Shunem. A wealthy woman lived there, and she urged him to eat a meal with her. So whenever he passed by, he would stop there for a meal.
9Then she said to her husband, “Listen. I know that the man who passes by here all the time is a holy man of God. 10Let's make a small upper room on the roof, and let's put a bed, a table, a chair, and a lamp there for him. Then whenever he comes to us, he can stay there.”
11One day when Elisha came there, he went into the room and lay down. 12Then he said to Gehazi his servant, “Call the woman of Shunem.” He called her, and she stood in front of him.
13Then Elisha said to Gehazi, “Tell her, ‘You have been very concerned about us. What can we do for you? Is there something we can request for you from the king or from the commander of the army?’”
She said, “I am living among my own people.”
14Then he said, “What can be done for her?”
Then Gehazi said, “Well, she has no son, and her husband is old.”
15He said, “Call her.” So he called her, and she stood at the doorway.
16Then he said to her, “At this time next year, you will be holding a son.”
But she said, “No, my lord, you man of God. Do not deceive your servant.”
17But the woman conceived, and she gave birth to a son at that same time of year, just as Elisha said to her.
Elisha Raises the Boy From the Dead
18The boy grew up, and one day he went out to his father, who was with the reapers. 19Then he said to his father, “My head! My head!”
His father said to his servant, “Carry him to his mother.” 20So he picked him up and carried him to his mother, and the boy sat on her lap until noon. Then he died.
21Then she went up and laid him on the bed of the man of God. She shut the door behind her and went out. 22Then she called to her husband and said, “Send one of the servants to me with one of the donkeys, so that I can run to the man of God and come back.”
32When Elisha came to the house, there the boy was—dead, lying on his bed. 33So he went in and he shut the door behind the two of them. Then he prayed to the Lord. 34He got up and lay down on top of the boy. He put his mouth to the boy's mouth, his eyes to the boy's eyes, his palms to the boy's palms. Then he bent down over him, and the boy's flesh became warm. 35He went back into the house and paced back and forth. Then he went up and bent down over him, and the boy sneezed seven times. Then the boy opened his eyes.
36Then Elisha called Gehazi and said, “Call the woman of Shunem!” So he called her, and she came in. He said, “Pick up your son.” 37So she came in and fell at Elisha's feet and bowed down to the ground. Then she picked up her son and went out.

Ephesians 5:15-33

15Consider carefully, then, how you walk, not as unwise people, but as wise people. 16Make the most of your time,[] because the days are evil. 17For this reason, do not be foolish, but understand what the will of the Lord is. 18And do not get drunk on wine, which causes you to lose control. Instead, be filled with the Spirit 19by speaking to one another with psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs (singing and making music with your hearts to the Lord), 20by always giving thanks for everything to God the Father, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, 21and by submitting to one another in reverence for Christ.
Husbands and Wives
22Wives, submit to your own husbands as to the Lord. 23For the husband is the head of the wife, just as Christ is the head of the church, his body, of which he himself is the Savior. 24Moreover, as the church submits to Christ, so also wives are to submit to their husbands in everything.
25Husbands, love your wives, in the same way as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her 26to make her holy, by cleansing her with the washing of water in connection with the Word. 27He did this so that he could present her to himself as a glorious church, having no stain or wrinkle or any such thing, but so that she would be holy and blameless. 28In the same way, husbands have an obligation to love their own wives as their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself. 29To be sure, no one has ever hated his own body, but nourishes and cherishes it, just as Christ does the church, 30because we are members of his body, of his flesh and of his bones.[] 31“For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two will be one flesh.”[] 32This is a great mystery, but I am talking about Christ and the church. 33In any case, each one of you also is to love his wife as himself, and each wife is to respect her husband.
