Daily Lectionary

September 7, 2024

These daily readings from the EHV follow the one-year daily lectionary provided in Christian Worship: Hymnal, the Lutheran Service Book, and the Treasury of Daily Prayer. In this lectionary, two readings of 15-25 verses each are provided for each day. Under this plan, nearly all of the New Testament and approximately one-third of the Old Testament are read each year. These readings fit well within the daily offices of Matins, Vespers, or Compline as daily family devotions.

2 Kings 4:38-5:8

Elisha Makes a Poison Meal Safe
38Then Elisha returned to Gilgal. There was a famine in the land. The sons of the prophets were sitting with him, and he said to his servant, “Put the large cooking pot on the fire, and cook some stew for the sons of the prophets.”
39One of the men went out to the field to gather plants. He found a wild vine and picked some gourds from it. He filled his garment with them. Then he came in and cut them into pieces for the pot of stew. They did not know what they were, 40but they served it to the men to eat. While they were eating the stew, they cried out, “Man of God, there is death in the pot!” So they could not eat it.
41But he said, “Take some flour and throw it into the pot.” Then he said, “Serve it to the people.” They ate, and there was nothing harmful in the pot.
A Miraculous Meal
42A man came from Baal Shalishah and brought the man of God some bread from the first ripe grain, twenty loaves of barley bread, and some new grain in his sack. Elisha said, “Set it before the people so that they can eat.”
43His attendant said, “How can I set this before one hundred men?” But he said, “Set it before the people so that they may eat, for this is what the Lord says: They will eat and have some left over.” 44So he set it before them. They ate, and they had some left over, just as the Lord had said.
Elisha Cures Na'aman's Leprosy
51Na'aman,[] the commander of the king of Aram's army, was a great man in the opinion of his master. He was highly honored because the Lord had provided victory for Aram through him. Although he was a powerful warrior, he had leprosy.[]
2Raiding parties had once gone out from Aram and brought back a young girl. She served Na'aman's wife. 3She said to her mistress, “I wish my master stood before the prophet who is in Samaria, because he would cure him of his leprosy.”
4So Na'aman went and told his master what the servant girl from the land of Israel had said.
5Then the king of Aram said, “Go there. I will send a letter to the king of Israel.” So Na'aman went, and he took ten talents[] of silver and six thousand shekels[] of gold and ten sets of clothing. 6Then he took the letter to the king of Israel. The letter said, “Now, when you receive this letter, you will know that I am sending my officer Na'aman to you so that you can cure him of his leprosy.”
7When the king of Israel read the letter, he tore his clothing and said, “Am I God that I can kill and make alive? Why is he sending a man to me for me to heal him from his leprosy? See how he is looking for a pretext to fight against me.”
8But when Elisha, the man of God, heard that the king of Israel had torn his clothes, he sent a message to the king: “Why have you torn your clothes? Let him come to me, and he will know that there is a prophet in Israel.”

Ephesians 6:1-24

Parents and Children
61Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. 2“Honor your father and mother,”[] which is the first commandment with a promise: 3“that it may go well with you and that you may live a long life on the earth.”[] 4Fathers, do not provoke your children to anger, but bring them up in the training and instruction of the Lord.
Slaves and Masters
5Slaves, obey your human masters[] with respect and reverence, and with a sincere heart, just as you obey Christ. 6Do this not just when they are watching, as if merely to please people, but as slaves of Christ, doing the will of God from the heart. 7Serve with eagerness, as for the Lord and not for people, 8because you know that each person, whether slave or free, will receive back from the Lord whatever good he has done. 9And masters, do the same for your slaves. Do not threaten them, because you know that the one who is both their Master and yours is in heaven, and with him there is no favoritism.
The Armor of God
10Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. 11Put on the full armor of God, so that you can stand against the schemes of the Devil. 12For our[] struggle is not against flesh and blood,[] but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the world rulers of this darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places. 13For this reason, take up the full armor of God, so that you will be able to take a stand on the evil day and, after you have done everything, to stand. 14Stand, then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness fastened in place, 15and with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace tied to your feet like sandals. 16At all times hold up the shield of faith, with which you will be able to extinguish all the flaming arrows of the Evil One. 17Also take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.
Prayer Requests
18At every opportunity, pray in the Spirit with every kind of prayer and petition. Stay alert for the same reason, always persevering in your intercession for all the saints. 19Pray for me also, that when I open my mouth a message will be given to me that boldly reveals the mystery of the gospel, 20for which I am an ambassador in chains. Pray that I may speak about it boldly, as it is necessary for me to speak.
Final Comments
21Tychicus, our dear brother and a faithful minister in the Lord, will tell you everything, so that you also may know how I am and what I am doing. 22I am sending him to you for this very reason, that you may know how we are, and that he may comfort your hearts. 23Peace to the brothers,[] and love with faith from God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. 24Grace be with all who have an undying[] love for our Lord Jesus Christ. Amen.[]
