Daily Lectionary

May 9, 2025

These daily readings from the EHV follow the one-year daily lectionary provided in Christian Worship: Hymnal, the Lutheran Service Book, and the Treasury of Daily Prayer. In this lectionary, two readings of 15-25 verses each are provided for each day. Under this plan, nearly all of the New Testament and approximately one-third of the Old Testament are read each year. These readings fit well within the daily offices of Matins, Vespers, or Compline as daily family devotions.

Exodus 39:32-40:16

Completion of the Dwelling
32In this way all the work on the Dwelling, that is, the Tent of Meeting, was finished. The people of Israel did everything exactly as the Lord had commanded Moses. 33They brought the Dwelling to Moses: the tent with all its furniture, its clasps, its boards, its crossbars, its posts, its socket bases, 34the covering of rams' skins dyed red, the covering made from hides of sea cows, the special veil, 35the Ark of the Testimony with its poles, the atonement seat, 36the table, all its utensils, the Bread of the Presence, 37the pure gold lampstand, its lamps (that is, the lamps to be set out in order), all its vessels and utensils, the oil for the Light, 38the golden altar, the anointing oil, the fragrant incense, the screen for the door of the Tent, 39the bronze altar, its bronze grate, its poles, all of its utensils, the basin and its pedestal, 40the hangings of the courtyard, its posts, its sockets, the screen for the gate of the courtyard, its ropes, its stakes, all the equipment for the service of the Dwelling (that is, the Tent of Meeting), 41the finely woven garments for ministering in the Holy Place, the holy garments for Aaron the priest, and the garments for his sons to minister in the priest's office. 42So the people of Israel did all the work according to everything that the Lord had commanded Moses. 43Moses inspected all the work, and he saw that they had done it exactly as the Lord had commanded, so Moses blessed them.
The Dedication of the Dwelling
401The Lord spoke to Moses. He said, 2“On the first day of the first month you are to raise up the Dwelling, the Tent of Meeting. 3Put the Ark of the Testimony in it, and screen the ark with the veil. 4Bring in the table, and set in order the things that are to be on it. Bring in the lampstand, and light its lamps. 5Set the golden[] altar for incense in front of the Ark of the Testimony, and put the screen in the doorway to the tent. 6Set the altar for burnt offerings in front of the entrance of the Dwelling, the Tent of Meeting. 7Set the basin between the Tent of Meeting and the altar, and put water in it. 8Set up the courtyard around it, and hang up the screen of the gate of the courtyard. 9Take the anointing oil, and anoint the tent and everything that is in it. You shall make it and all its furniture holy, and it will be holy. 10Anoint the altar for burnt offerings with all its utensils. Consecrate the altar, and the altar will be most holy. 11Anoint the large basin and its pedestal, and consecrate it.
12“Bring Aaron and his sons to the entrance of the Tent of Meeting, and wash them with water. 13Put the holy garments on Aaron, and anoint him and consecrate him, so that he may minister to me in the priest's office. 14Bring his sons and put tunics on them. 15Anoint them, as you anointed their father, so that they may minister to me in the priest's office. Their anointing will give them a permanent priesthood throughout their generations.” 16Moses did so. He did everything exactly as the Lord had commanded him.

Luke 8:22-39

Jesus Calms the Storm
22One day Jesus got into a boat with his disciples and told them, “Let's go over to the other side of the lake.” So they set out. 23As they were sailing, he fell asleep. A powerful windstorm came down on the lake, the boat was filling up with water, and they were in danger.
24They went to him and woke him, saying, “Master, master, we're going to die!”
He woke up, rebuked the wind and the raging waves, and they stopped. Then it was calm.
25He said to them, “Where is your faith?”
They were afraid and amazed and said to one another, “Who, then, is this, that he commands even the winds and the water, and they obey him?”
A Demon-Possessed Man and a Herd of Pigs
26They sailed down to the region of the Gerasenes,[] which is across from Galilee. 27When Jesus stepped ashore, a man from the town met him. He was possessed by demons and for a long time had not worn any clothes. He did not live in a house but in the tombs. 28When he saw Jesus, he cried out, fell down before him, and said with a loud voice, “What do I have to do with you, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? I beg you, don't torment me!” 29For Jesus had commanded the unclean spirit to come out of the man. In fact, the unclean spirit had seized him many times. He was kept under guard, and although he was bound with chains and shackles, he would break the restraints and was driven by the demon into deserted places.
30Jesus asked him, “What is your name?”
He said, “Legion,” because many demons had gone into him. 31They were begging Jesus that he would not order them to go into the abyss. 32A herd of many pigs was feeding there on the mountain. The demons begged Jesus to let them go into the pigs, and he gave them permission. 33The demons went out of the man and entered the pigs, and the herd rushed down the steep bank into the lake and drowned.
34When those who were feeding the pigs saw what happened, they ran away and reported it in the town and in the countryside. 35People went out to see what had happened. They came to Jesus and found the man from whom the demons had gone out, sitting at Jesus' feet. He was clothed and in his right mind, and the people were afraid. 36Those who saw it told them how the demon-possessed man was saved. 37The whole crowd of people from the surrounding country of the Gerasenes[] asked Jesus to leave them, because they were gripped with great fear.
As Jesus got into the boat and started back, 38the man from whom the demons had gone out begged to be with him. But Jesus sent him away, saying, 39“Return to your home and tell how much God has done for you.” Then he went through the whole town proclaiming what Jesus had done for him.
