Daily Lectionary

May 10, 2025

These daily readings from the EHV follow the one-year daily lectionary provided in Christian Worship: Hymnal, the Lutheran Service Book, and the Treasury of Daily Prayer. In this lectionary, two readings of 15-25 verses each are provided for each day. Under this plan, nearly all of the New Testament and approximately one-third of the Old Testament are read each year. These readings fit well within the daily offices of Matins, Vespers, or Compline as daily family devotions.

Exodus 40:17-38

17And so in the first month of the second year, on the first day of the month, the Dwelling was raised. 18Moses raised the Dwelling. He laid out its socket bases, set up its boards, inserted its crossbars, and raised its posts. 19He spread the tent over the Dwelling and put the cover for the tent above it,[] just as the Lord had commanded Moses.
20He took the Testimony and put it into the ark. He set the poles in place on the ark and placed the atonement seat on top of the ark. 21He brought the ark into the tent. He set up the special veil to screen the Ark of the Testimony, just as the Lord had commanded Moses.
22He put the table in the Tent of Meeting, on the north side of the tent, outside of the veil. 23He set the bread in order on the table in the presence of the Lord, just as the Lord had commanded Moses.
24He put the lampstand in the Tent of Meeting, opposite the table, on the south side of the tent. 25He lit the lamps before the Lord, just as the Lord had commanded Moses.
26He put the golden altar in the Tent of Meeting in front of the veil. 27He burned incense of fragrant spices on it, just as the Lord commanded Moses. 28He put up the screen for the entryway to the tent. 29He set the altar of burnt offering at the door of the Dwelling, the Tent of Meeting, and offered the burnt offering and the grain offering on it, just as the Lord had commanded Moses.
30He set the basin between the Tent of Meeting and the altar and put water in it, with which to wash. 31Moses, Aaron, and Aaron's sons washed their hands and their feet there. 32When they went into the Tent of Meeting and when they came near the altar, they washed, just as the Lord had commanded Moses.
33He erected the courtyard around the tent and the altar, and he set up the screen of the gate of the courtyard. So Moses completed the work.
34Then the cloud covered the Tent of Meeting, and the Glory of the Lord filled the tent. 35Moses was not able to enter the Tent of Meeting, because the cloud stayed over it, and the Glory of the Lord filled the tent. 36Throughout all their journeys, whenever the cloud was taken up from over the tent, the people of Israel would move forward. 37But if the cloud was not taken up, then they would not travel until the day when it was taken up. 38For in the sight of the whole house of Israel, the cloud of the Lord was above the tent by day, and there was fire in the cloud by night, throughout all their journeys.

Luke 8:40-56

The Daughter of Jairus
40When Jesus returned, the crowd welcomed him, because they were all waiting for him. 41Just then, a man named Jairus arrived. He was a ruler of the synagogue. He fell down at Jesus' feet and begged him to come to his house, 42because he had an only daughter who was about twelve years old, and she was dying.
As he went, the crowds pressed tightly against him. 43There was a woman who had a flow of blood for twelve years. Even though she had paid physicians all she had to live on, she could not be healed by anyone. 44She approached Jesus from behind and touched the fringe of his garment. Immediately her flow of blood stopped. 45And Jesus said, “Who touched me?”
As everyone was denying it, Peter and those with him said, “Master, the crowds are pressing in and crowding you, yet you say, ‘Who touched me?’”
46But Jesus said, “Someone touched me, because I know that power has gone out from me.” 47When the woman saw that she did not escape his notice, she came trembling and fell down before Jesus. In the presence of all the people she told him why she had touched him, and how she was healed immediately. 48And he said to her, “Daughter, your faith has saved you. Go in peace.”
49While he was still speaking, someone came from the synagogue ruler's house, saying, “Your daughter has died. Don't trouble the Teacher anymore.”
50But when Jesus heard it, he told Jairus, “Do not be afraid. Only believe, and she will be saved.”
51When he came to the house, he did not let anyone enter, except Peter, John, James, and the child's father and mother. 52All the people were weeping and mourning for her, but he said, “Stop weeping, because she is not dead, but sleeping.”
53They laughed at him, knowing that she was dead. 54But he[] took her by the hand and called out, “Child, get up!” 55Her spirit returned, and she immediately got up. He ordered that something be given to her to eat. 56Her parents were amazed, but he instructed them not to tell anyone what had happened.
