Old Testament

2 Chronicles 20:31-21:3
The Summary of Jehoshaphat's Reign
31Jehoshaphat ruled as king over Judah. He was thirty-five years old when he became king, and he ruled in Jerusalem for twenty-five years. His mother's name was Azubah daughter of Shilhi.
32He walked in the ways of his father Asa by doing what was right in the eyes of the Lord. He did not turn from it.
33The high places, however, were not removed. The people still did not set their hearts toward the God of their fathers.
34The rest of the acts of Jehoshaphat, from first to last, are recorded in the annals of Jehu son of Hanani, which are included in the Book of the Kings of Israel.
35After this, Jehoshaphat king of Judah joined with Ahaziah king of Israel, who did wicked things. 36He joined with him to build ships to go to Tarshish.[] They built the ships in Ezion Geber. 37Eliezer son of Dodavahu from Mareshah prophesied against Jehoshaphat: “Because you joined with Ahaziah, the Lord has destroyed what you have made.” The ships were wrecked, so they were not able to go to Tarshish.
Jehoram (Joram) King of Judah
211Jehoshaphat rested with his fathers and was buried with his fathers in the City of David. His son Jehoram ruled in his place.
2Jehoram had brothers, who were the sons of Jehoshaphat. They were Azariah, Jehiel, Zechariah, Azariahu, Michael, and Shephatiah. All these were sons of Jehoshaphat king of Israel. 3Their father gave them many gifts: silver, gold, and valuable possessions, as well as fortified cities in Judah, but he gave the kingship to Jehoram because he was the firstborn.

Footnotes

  • 20:36 The references to Tarshish in verses 36 and 37 are puzzling since in other passages Tarshish is a location on the Mediterranean Sea. These ships, however, are sailing on the Red Sea to Ophir (1 Kings 22:49). Perhaps they are the kind of ships that went to Tarshish, or there is an otherwise unknown Tarshish on the Red Sea.
